Prayer
Well, its so good to be back with you again on Wed night. 7 weeks ago tonight, I was having open heart surgery. So praise the Lord, I am back, and thankful to be here.
So since its been a little while since we have been in Genesis I think it would be good to spend a few minutes to get us back up to speed.
First remember that the story of Genesis, after Chapter 11, has focused onto a man and his family, Abraham and his descendants. We have seen Abraham and Sarah, their sojournings and ultimately the miracle birth of their son Isaac.
We saw Abraham send his servant to get bride for Isaac from his family. We compared this to the HS going out into the world to find a bride for the Son of God.
We studied God commanding Abraham to sacrifice Isaac in the exact place where Jesus would be crucified some 2,000 years later.
More recently we studied Isaac and Rebecca having their own children, Jacob and Esau, twins that were very different from each other. One favored by their father, Esau, the other favored by their mother, Jacob.
We have looked at Esau’s dis-interest in spiritual things and Jacobs tendency towards less that straight forward dealings, as his name imply’s - heal catcher/supplanter.
All these details come into play in tonight’s story in chapter 27 - a very famous even infamous account in the lives of Jacob Esau Isaac and Rebecca.
Let’s stand as we read from God’s word.
Genesis 27:1–10 (NASB95)
1 Now it came about, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.”
2 Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death.
3 “Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me;
4 and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”
5 Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,
6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, “Behold, I heard your father speak to your brother Esau, saying,
7 ‘Bring me some game and prepare a savory dish for me, that I may eat, and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’
8 “Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you.
9 “Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves.
10 “Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”
This story brings about lots of questions. It seems that all parties carry blame in this story of deception and disregard for Gods revealed will. the whole narrative is overshadowed by two truths, the prophesy given at the birth of the twins.
Genesis 25:23 NASB95
23 The Lord said to her, “Two nations are in your womb; And two peoples will be separated from your body; And one people shall be stronger than the other; And the older shall serve the younger.”
The second overshadowing truth that looms large here is also found in Gen 25;
Genesis 25:28 NASB95
28 Now Isaac loved Esau, because he had a taste for game, but Rebekah loved Jacob.
