Big idea, this is the reassurance of Jesus for those who are following in the path of discipleship. Just as we see these characteristics in ourselves they ought to be the assurance that our relationship with God is genuine.
Read the beatitudes, we need to read them as individual blessings, in the midst of the greater whole.
There are two errors people tend to fall into, one is to ignore

7“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
This is not commanding us to earn mercy by showing it to others.
The emphasis of the beatitudes is the people of the kingdom of heaven.
