What it means to be lost: Luke 19:10, For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

Until a man is lost, he cannot be found!

A. What does it mean to be Lost?

1. Was lost (622)(apollumi from apo = away from + olethros = state of utter ruin) conveys the sense of utter destruction of one's purpose for which they were created which is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

I.

A. To Be Lost Is to Be Without Hope.

(Ephesians 2:12), That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world:

1. Hope

a. Hope in Scripture is not the world's definition of "I hope so.”

b. Hope is defined as a desire for some future good with the expectation of obtaining it.

c. Hope is confident expectancy.

d. Hope is the looking forward to something with some reason for confidence respecting fulfillment.

2. “Having no hope”

a. There is no desire for future good and no expectation of obtaining it

b. No confidence or assurance

c. Nothing to look forward to

3. Hope has to do with assurance of salvation

a. (Colossians 1:5), “The hope which is laid up for you in heaven.”

b. (Colossians 1:27), “Christ in you the hope of glory.”

c. (Hebrews 6:19), “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul.”

d. A hope that is steadfast and sure.

4. Lost people have no prospect of heaven but that of hell.

5. To be lost is to be hopeless.

B. To Be Lost Is to Be Without God in the World (Ephesians 2:12).

C. To Be Lost Is to Be Without Eternal Life (1 John 5:12) He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
