We know that genetic heritage transfers traits to the offspring. Maybe you have your Mom’s eyes or Dad’s freckles. Most of us are roughly the same height and build as a parent or grandparent. In our text, we find John continuing to make that same point, which is why we must take sin seriously. Because while those who demonstrate Spirit-filled, grace-motivated righteousness reflect the righteous nature of their divine Father, others who make a practice of sinning reflect the traits of the devil.
