Breakfast with Jesus
TEXT: John 21:1-14
John 21:1–14 ESV
After this Jesus revealed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and he revealed himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas (called the Twin), Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work, and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off. When they got out on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared ask him, “Who are you?” They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.
Sometimes just having breakfast with Jesus is what matters most.
Joseph in the Old Testament faced a calamity on a global scale. Both the Egyptians and the people of Israel were starving, food was rationed so they could survive. When his brothers arrived in Egypt seeking food, Joseph says to them:
Genesis 45:5-7
Do not be distressed or angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there are yet five years in which there will be no plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve a remnant on earth …
Gospel literally means, ‘news that is good.’ So, we must find out from Jesus and the Gospel what matters most.
John 21:1-14
Jesus revealed Himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias, and He revealed Himself in this way. Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, James, John and two other of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, ‘I’m going fishing.’ They said to him, ‘We’ll go with you.’ They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, ‘Children, do you have any fish?’ They answered, ‘No.’ He said to them, ‘Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you’ll find some.’ So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in, because of the quantity of fish. Then John said to Peter, ‘It is the Lord!’ When Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment and threw himself into the sea. The other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, about a hundred yards off. When they got on land, they saw a charcoal fire in place, with fish laid out on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, ‘Bring some of the fish you have just caught.’ So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, 153 of them. And although there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples dared ask Him, ‘Who are You?’ They knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so with the fish. This was now the third time Jesus was revealed to the disciples after He was raised from the dead.
By the time we come to John 21, Jesus has been crucified, buried in a rich man’s tomb, and raised from the dead three days later.
By His death, burial and resurrection, Jesus fulfilled more than 600 prophecies, some of them thousands of years old.
His disciples didn’t expect it to be Jesus - they didn’t expect Him to show up again in their old stomping grounds.
What about YOU? What are you hoping for?
John 21:12 (ESV)
Jesus said to them, ‘Come and have breakfast.’ None of the disciples dared ask Him, ‘Who are you?’ They knew it was the Lord.
I’d like to say to us all: Be careful what you fish for - because you might get it.
Mark 8:36
What does it profit a man if he gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
I’ve thought - why does the Bible give us the exact number of fish? 153.
It’s irrelevant because Jesus already has fish on the shore grilling.
But in this passage, what mattered most?
What mattered was these fishermen just sitting down to have breakfast with Jesus.
They sit in silence together - being with Him is what really matters — not the 153.
Luke 5:8 (ESV)
He fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, ‘Depart from me, for I am a sinful man.’
This is exactly the way all of humanity had related to God for thousands of years — if you’re good enough - if you’re spiritual enough - if you’re moral enough - if you’re loving enough — God will bless you.
But now Peter knows, despite his failings - after three years with Jesus - he understands
What Matters Most.
I don’t want my life to be about fishing for something Jesus had all along.
What really matters? JESUS matters.
What if you just spent some time PRAYING and FEASTING with Jesus - for 30 days?
ACTION STEPS:
1 - Set aside the next 30 days. Purpose to have BREAKFAST with Jesus.
2 - Re-read the account of Jesus on the shore in John 21.
3 - Get some quiet time with God during this season.
