I. THE MEANING OF REPENTANCE.

1. It means to change the mind; Matt. 12:41.

2. It means to turn to God from evil; Acts 26:18; 1 Thess. 1:9.

3. It means to confess sin; Luke 15:21; Ps. 38:18.

II. THE IMPORTANCE OF REPENTANCE.

1. It was the message of John the Baptist; Matt. 3:1–10.

2. It was the message of our Lord; Matt. 4:17; Rev. 2, 3.

3. It was the message of the Apostle Paul; Acts 17:30; 26:19, 20.

III. THE NECESSITY OF REPENTANCE.

1. It is the direct command of God; Acts 17:30.

2. It is necessary to receive God’s forgiveness; Acts 3:19.

3. It is the only way to escape destruction; Jonah 3:4, 10.

IV. THE PLACE WHERE REPENTANCE CAN OCCUR.

1. Joseph’s brethren repented in Egypt; Gen. 50:17, 18.

2. Jonah repented in the whale’s belly; Jonah 2:1–10.

3. The publican repented in the temple; Luke 18:13.

V. THE DANGER OF NEGLECTING REPENTANCE.

1. Those who don’t repent ensnare themselves; Ps. 9:16.

2. Those who don’t repent will perish; Luke 13:3, 5.

3. Those who don’t repent will be judged accordingly; John 12:48.

VI. THE TIME WHEN REPENTANCE CAN OCCUR.

1. Josiah repented when he heard the Word of God; 2 Kings 22:11.

2. David repented when rebuked by Nathan; 2 Sam. 12:10, 13, 16.

3. Repentance comes when there is hatred of sin; Job 42:5, 6.

VII. THE EFFECT OF REPENTANCE.

1. It brings pardon; Isa. 55:7.

2. It brings forgiveness; Acts 3:19.

3. It brings Heavenly joy; Luke 15:7, 10.
