The prophet instructs Jehu to annihilate the entire house of Ahab

2 Kings 9:7–10 ESV
And you shall strike down the house of Ahab your master, so that I may avenge on Jezebel the blood of my servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord. For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel. And I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. And the dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her.” Then he opened the door and fled.

When Jehu learns that Ahab’s son is within striking distance, he marches to Jezreel.

Jehu kills King Joram and King Ahaziah
Hosea 1:5 ESV
And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the Valley of Jezreel.”

God told Hosea that the demise of Jehu’s dynasty was to be accompanied by the downfall of the Northern Kingdom. In a display of poetic justice the Lord would break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel, the site of Jehu’s sin.

Hosea 1:6 ESV
She conceived again and bore a daughter. And the Lord said to him, “Call her name No Mercy, for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel, to forgive them at all.
Hosea 1:7–8 ESV
But I will have mercy on the house of Judah, and I will save them by the Lord their God. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.” When she had weaned No Mercy, she conceived and bore a son.
Hosea 1:9 ESV
And the Lord said, “Call his name Not My People, for you are not my people, and I am not your God.”
God clearly is not happy with Isreal!
Let’s pause for a moment!
Dispensationalism is a method of interpreting history that divides God’s work and purposes toward mankind into different periods of time.
Hosea is written during the dispensation of law
from the Exodus until it was suspended after Jesus Christ’s death.
During the Dispensation of Law, God dealt specifically with the Jewish nation through the Mosaic Covenant, or the written Law, found in Exodus 19–23. T
The Law is based of the Justice of God, and so knows no mercy!
It accounts for the destruction of the enemies of God and of their cities and nations, and why God fought for His chosen people Isreal.
For centuries He watched over and protected them from their enemies, but when they forsook Him and became idolaters, His “Glory” left the Temple and He gave them over to their enemies.
Eventually, due to the people’s disobedience to the covenant, the tribes of Israel lost the Promised Land and were subjected to bondage.
Prophetic forecast
Hosea 1:10–11 ESV
Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured or numbered. And in the place where it was said to them, “You are not my people,” it shall be said to them, “Children of the living God.” And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together, and they shall appoint for themselves one head. And they shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.
Isaiah 9:6–7 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.
Read Hosea 2:1-4
Hosea 2:5 ESV
For their mother has played the whore; she who conceived them has acted shamefully. For she said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drink.’
My lovers: Other god’s (Baals)
Because Isreal believed they supplied her physical nourishment (Bread and water) and protection (wool and linen) Oil and drink (pleasure)
But God said I’m about to cut off all access to these lovers!
Hosea 2:6 ESV
Therefore I will hedge up her way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths.
Hosea 2:7 ESV
She shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and she shall seek them but shall not find them. Then she shall say, ‘I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now.’
Let’s paint this picture!
Hosea 2:8 ESV
And she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished on her silver and gold, which they used for Baal.
This is a description of a God who is serious about His relationship with us!
Ephesians 2:4–5 ESV
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Ephesians 2:6–7 ESV
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
