WHAT'S YOUR ONE THING
“Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest.”
INTRODUCTION:
All was lost because of just “one thing”!
It grieved Jesus to see this young ruler go away sorrowful and defeated, but Jesus had no alternative but to let him go.
Young man and young woman, Jesus is now “beholding” you in love.
Have you accepted Him?
Are you, too, rejecting His love for the gaudy objects of this world?
APPROACHING SALVATION, THIS RULER LOOKED PROMISING.
1. He went to the right source—Christ.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
2. His question was right, “What must I do?”
And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
3. He sensed a great urgency—“running,”
And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?
4. He showed a humble spirit—“kneeled,”
5. He had Biblical knowledge “from youth,”
And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.
6. But he had a tender spot, and Jesus touched it.
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
7. “Not far from the kingdom.” “One thing,”
And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
“ONE THING” CAN ROB US OF LIFE’S GREATEST BLESSINGS.
1. One temptation cost Eve her paradise.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
2. One morsel cost Esau his birthright.
Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.
3. One wrong decision caused Lot’s ruin
And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
4. One last look was fatal to Lot’s wife
But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.
5. One lie robbed Ananias of his life, Acts 5:4
Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
7. Deferring salvation one day may rob one of Christ!
While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation.
8. “One thing” separated the ruler from salvation!
YES, “JESUS BEHOLDING HIM LOVED HIM.” CONSIDER:
1. Young—he had a useful life to give, Eccles. 12:1.
2. He “went away”—failed his finest moment!
3. For an instant it seemed that he held the “pearl of great price” in his heart. One slip … gone!
He counted his “possessions,” but he failed to count the cost of rejecting Christ!
