Main Idea

Followers of Jesus Christ are to be bold and persistent in their prayer knowing that our heavenly Father will provide us the good gift of the Holy Spirit

Heart Felt Need To Address

Our tendency to give up and not center our prayers on the LORD made it necessary for the Holy Spirit to include this scripture

whatever you want whatever you need by Tony! Toni! Tone! singing in concert at six flags over Georgia where I worked during the summer of 1991 after graduating from high school. Working at my first full-time job. Getting ready to attend college in the fall.
The days were hot like today. In fact everyday was hot in Georgia and I had chosen to take a job working outside all day long.
I don't wish you no bad luck baby
I don't wish you no strain
I only want to expose your life to
The finer things
I offer you my company girl
You don't need no sympathy, just me
Some one who cares
Whatever you want
Girl you know I can provide
Whatever you need (whatever you need baby)
Call six three two twenty-one three five
Now maybe I should drive right over
Show you my new ride
Or take you shopping out on the town
And then make you feel your best
I'll go out of my way to make sure you have everything
I want to be the one who will always be there
To give you
Whatever you want
Girl you know I can provide
Whatever you need (whatever you need baby)
Call six three two twenty-one three five
Whatever you want
Girl you know I can provide
Whatever you need (whatever you need baby)
Call six three two twenty-one three five
Now imagine how ladies or people attempted to call that phone number

Transition To Body- Context of Today’s Passage is the Spiritual Practices of Jesus’ Disciples

Luke 10:1-36- Jesus ministry involves sending out the disciples to be His ambassadors. The disciples have gone out healing the sick and proclaiming the Kingdom of God- fighting against satanic powers in the world with the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall hurt them.
Luke 10:25-37- Love God with your heart, soul, strength, and mind and love neighbor as your self- your neighbor is anyone needing help and whom you can show compassion and mercy i.e. disciples are Christlike.
Luke 10:38-42- Disciples prioritize submitting to Jesus, listening to Jesus, and learning from Jesus’ teaching so that they do not become distracted while serving Jesus
How will the disciples continue the awesome ministry of Jesus and remain faithful ambassadors of Jesus Christ even after Jesus dies on the cross, is raised from the dead 3 days later, and ascends back to heaven to the right hand of God the Father?
How will the disciples continue to get their marching orders, direction, and power? How did Jesus do it?
Through prayer. Prayer is not optional for Jesus followers. Prayer is a necessity and requirement of discipleship

Body- Getting Whatever You Need

Jesus’ Followers’ Attitude Toward Prayer

Luke 11:1 ESV
1 Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

Disciples observe practice of prayer and are taught to pray

Jesus at prayer is a frequent and very important image in this Gospel: at baptism (3:21), before choosing the Twelve (6:12), before the first prophecy of his passion (9:18), and at his transfiguration (9:28), among other occasions. Jesus’ prayer life has now prompted a request from a disciple.

Honored Be Your Name

Luke 11:2 ESV
2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
Jesus Provides the prototype disciple's prayer
1 Corinthians 10:31 ESV
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

Kingdom Rule

Luke 11:2 ESV
2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come.
On the most basic level, we may say the kingdom of God is present wherever the king is to be found. Jesus is present by his Spirit both in the church and in the world

Fatherly Provision

Luke 11:3 ESV
3 Give us each day our daily bread,
Lamentations 3:20–26 ESV
20 My soul continually remembers it and is bowed down within me. 21 But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: 22 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; 23 they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” 25 The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. 26 It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.

Compassionate Example & Strengthening Power

Luke 11:4 ESV
4 and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.”
Matthew 6:13 ESV
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Matthew 6:13 says lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Whereas Luke 11:4 just says lead us not into temptation
James 1:13–18 ESV
13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Jesus’ Followers’ Audaciousness In Prayer

Luke 11:5–9 ESV
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.

Jesus uses parabolic teaching to demonstrate the disciple's prayer in action/practice

impudence, shamelessness- we ought not be embarrassed to go to our heavenly father in prayer, not matter what the need and/or request
friend (philos)- affection in itself was not enough to open the door, the friend received what he needed because he was bold, he was not ashamed to ask.
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Jesus gave the disciples authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.

Jesus' Followers' Assurance From Prayer

Luke 11:10–12 ESV
10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?

Jesus’ Follower’s Anointing Through Prayer

Luke 11:13 ESV
13 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus presents what we ultimately receive from prayer
Yes, Luke 11:13, gives the assurance of the good gift the heavenly Father will give to the disciples/followers of Jesus Christ (and hence what Jesus will provide His disciples)- the Holy Spirit:
John 14:6–14 ESV
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.

Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
Ask anything is Jesus' name, and Jesus will do it.
John 14:15 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
John 14:15–18 ESV
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit

Jesus will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper
The Spirit of Truth whom the world cannot receive
The Holy Spirit dwells in Jesus' followers
The Holy Spirit is a helper and is sent to followers of Jesus
The Holy Spirit is a teacher and reminder
The Holy Spirit brings us peace
John 14:25–27 ESV
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.

Transition To Close

THE STORY is told of a man who went on a voyage. He had been longing for so long to go on this voyage. It was a cruise and it cost him all he had. He packed himself peanut butter and jelly sandwiches because he knew he wouldn’t be able to afford to buy anything on the cruise. It was a weeklong cruise and he planned to eat his peanut butter and jelly sandwiches the whole time for the length of the trip.
As he finally embarked upon his long-awaited vacation, he was excited about the upcoming fun although it included the same meal day in and day out. At first, he was fine with his chosen fare, but after awhile, he began to notice all the food available to the other travelers. People were gorging themselves on beef, ham, turkey, chicken, and vegetables. He saw people having room service.
He thought to himself, “Lord have mercy. I am here with peanut butter and jelly and these people are eating all of this!”
One day he saw one of the guys coming by with a big plate of food and the man asked how much would it cost just to get a little meal. This guy with the plate stared at the man. The man continued to explain that he only had enough money for his ticket, didn’t bring enough for the meals, but now thought he would like to try something small. With disbelief, the guy told the man that the meals were included in the price of the ticket.
There are a lot of Christians today eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, wondering why they can’t enjoy a megameal. They look around at other Christians who seem to be victorious, seem to be “on top,” or seem to be eating spiritual steak and potatoes, and wonder why they are limited to peanut butter, jelly, and bread. What that man on the cruise ship didn’t understand is what far too many Christians don’t understand, and that is the principle of grace.
When Jesus went through the heavens and was seated on the right-hand side of the Father, all the meals were included in that ticket. All the help is in that ticket. All the enable-ment is in that ticket. All the strength is in that ticket. Leave the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches alone and avail yourself of the provisions of God that are in the ticket. Keep in mind, however, that they are only dispensed at the throne of grace.
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That sav'd a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears reliev'd;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believ'd!
Thro' many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promis'd good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.

Ephesians 2:8–10 ESV
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Romans 8:26–30 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. 28 And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. 29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
James 5:13–18 ESV
13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit.

Power of Prayer

Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
Luke 22:39–46 ESV
39 And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Father Forgive Them

Luke 23:34 ESV
34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
