SERIES: MAKING ROOM
Almost 10% of households in the United States are currently renting a self storage unit.
When you think of the number of self-storage units—there are more self-storage facilities in the U.S. than there are McDonald's restaurants.
with about 48,500 locations at last count,
that's actually more than three times the number of Golden Arches (14,350).

Key Points

3 Heroes God Made Strong in Their Weakness
Gideon, Moses, and David:

Investigate / Application

Gideon is first introduced in Scripture as hiding from the Midianites in a wine press (Judges 6:11).
Judges 6:11 NLT
Then the angel of the Lord came and sat beneath the great tree at Ophrah, which belonged to Joash of the clan of Abiezer. Gideon son of Joash was threshing wheat at the bottom of a winepress to hide the grain from the Midianites.
That’s not his only display of weakness, however.
Judges 6:17 NLT
Gideon replied, “If you are truly going to help me, show me a sign to prove that it is really the Lord speaking to me.
Not fully believing that he would save Israel, Gideon immediately asked God for a sign that what he was witnessing was Him.
God was patient and granted that to Gideon, who led 10 men to take down Baal’s altar (Judges 6:14-28).
Then Gideon did it again; he asked for another sign,
this time in the form of the wet and dry fleece.
God once again answered Gideon’s request (Judges 6:36-40).
The rest of the Gideon’s biblical account demonstrates his bravery and righteousness.
He had 32,000 men and told them if you were fearful go home leaving 10,000 men to fight.
Judges 7:3 NLT
Therefore, tell the people, ‘Whoever is timid or afraid may leave this mountain and go home.’ ” So 22,000 of them went home, leaving only 10,000 who were willing to fight.
God said, still too many so he took them for a drink at the water.
Judges 7:6 NLT
Only 300 of the men drank from their hands. All the others got down on their knees and drank with their mouths in the stream.
He took an army of 300 valiant men to subdue and eventually overthrow Israel’s foes.
Judges 7:16 NLT
He divided the 300 men into three groups and gave each man a ram’s horn and a clay jar with a torch in it.
Judges 7:22 NLT
When the 300 Israelites blew their rams’ horns, the Lord caused the warriors in the camp to fight against each other with their swords. Those who were not killed fled to places as far away as Beth-shittah near Zererah and to the border of Abel-meholah near Tabbath.
Once he saved Israel from the Midianites, as God told him initially, the people of Israel wanted Gideon to be king.
Judges 8:22–23 NLT
Then the Israelites said to Gideon, “Be our ruler! You and your son and your grandson will be our rulers, for you have rescued us from Midian.” But Gideon replied, “I will not rule over you, nor will my son. The Lord will rule over you!
Gideon insisted that God should be the sole king in Israel, and that resulted in 40 years of no foreign nation oppressing Israel.
Judges 8:28 NLT
That is the story of how the people of Israel defeated Midian, which never recovered. Throughout the rest of Gideon’s lifetime—about forty years—there was peace in the land.
Once a frightened warrior hiding in a winepress,
God called Gideon to overcome fear and a lack of faith to be a faithful, mighty commander.
Fittingly, Gideon is included as one of several “heroes of faith” mentioned in Hebrews 11
Hebrews 11:32–34 NLT
How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets. By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight.

Make it personal

DISCOVERY 1 —
Discovering that real strength comes through choosing to willfully to live through true weakness.
Where do you find yourself hiding?
Not trusting God
Not living in His Peace and
Not letting the Holy Spirit led you?
Gideon was fearful, filled with doubt, didn’t trust God...
Nevertheless, God used him in a mighty way — 40 years of peace followed him!
God Word has been spoken and Jesus has brought us into a new covenant—one of grace and still we try to do it on our own.

Closing

Hebrews 9:15 ESV
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Galatians 1:4 NLT
Jesus gave his life for our sins, just as God our Father planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world in which we live.
Galatians 3:13 NLT
But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he was hung on the cross, he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.”
Galatians 3:20 NLT
Now a mediator is helpful if more than one party must reach an agreement. But God, who is one, did not use a mediator when he gave his promise to Abraham.
Isaiah 44:22 NLT
I have swept away your sins like a cloud. I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist. Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”
