What does God want them to know? We don’t have to worry, but instead seek and trust
Why? It brings PEACE
What does God want them to do? Trust God
Why? It brings PEACE
ME/WE
Have you had the case of the “what ifs?”
“what if that happens?” “what if that doesn’t happen?”
1. Maybe you have had this with a job or your finances
Have you ever had the “what ifs” around your job or finances
What if I lose my job? They are doing downsizing and what if they downsize me out?
Or maybe it is not a about losing your job it is about not having enough money…inflation has been squeezing you financially or MONEY IS COMING TO YOUR MIND BECAUSE THINGS ARE BREAKING DOWN, expensive things
- fix my Car
- my Furnace
- Refrigerator
- we know what is our bank account and it does not look good to fix the car or buy a new car
What if I can’t pay my utilities bill or medical bill
ANYBODY BEEN THERE??
2. Maybe for us it is not about having money or our job but it has been about our HEALTH
We have are having some unusally things happening and we wondering “what if” those unusually things are not good things
Anybody?
Or there is thing called Covid, Covid has brought a lot of “what if” what if I get Covid, what will happen?
3. For some of us it is not MONEY or HEALTH
Relationships
Will they like me?
Will they stay with me?
Will I be single FOREVER
4. Government
what if this happens in the government....what are we to do?
These are the top 4 “what if” statements we make in our world
Money/job
Health
Relationship
Government
MANY TIMES THESE “WHAT IF” ARE THINGS TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT, WE SHOULDN’T IGNORE THEM, BUT OFTEN THE “WHAT IFS” OF LIFE CAN EASILY TURN INTO A THING THAT IS NOT GOOD FOR US, AND WHAT IS THE THING THEY CAN TURN INTO? WORRY
ONE MINUTE WE CAN BE CONCERNED ABOUT
MONEY, HEALTH, RELATIONSHIP, AND THAT THINGS TO WE ARE DOWN THE RIVER OF WORRY INTO THE LAKE OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION
WE WERE JUST ON THE LAKE OF CONCERN, CALM AND COLLECTED
NOW WE ARE ON THE ROUGH WATERS OF WORRY AND IT IS PUSHING US TO MORE AND MORE WORRY
WHICH LEADS TO A LACK OF PEACE
SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
STRESS
ANXIETY
DEPRESSION
ANGER
What do WE STOP GOING DOWN THE LAKE OF WORRY?
GOD
This is what Jesus wants to address to the crowd. Who had plenty of things to worry about
They were currently being occupied, overtaxed, and oppressed by the Roman governement
They were not free people
They worried about their daily bread
What am I going to eat today
What if we do not make enough money for food
What if we can’t find food
Most of us don’t have that problem (we have food for days)
They could easily find themselves going down the RIVER of WORRY to the LAKE OF ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION AND SLEEPLESS NIGHTS
What does Jesus say to this crowd?
What does our Heavenly Father say to us?
Sorry? Wish I could do something? Figure it out?
YOU NEED TO FIND A SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO HELP YOU DRIVE YOUR BOAT
No, because He is our Father and a good good Father, God has another approach.
Matthew 6:25 ESV
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Matthew 6:19–24 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
what is the therefore therefore…it is pointing back to what Jesus just said…what did Jesus just say?
Jesus says to us before this section is....do not be let worldly wealthy be your master....
Don’t be concerned about what you can get, CONSUME on this EARTH…do not have your heart set on worldly things that FADE away
But be concerned about the kingdom of God
KINGDOM RICHES DO NOT FADE AWAY
You can only serve one master God or MONEY
MONEY IS A GOOD SERVANT BUT A HORRIBLE MASTER
JESUS CONTINUES
Matthew 6:25 ESV
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
(5 times Jesus says do not be anxious)
Eat, drink
Body, clothes
Jesus says to the group the crowd a
He is saying this to a group of OPPRESSED people who literally meant the Lord’s prayer give us our day our daily bread.
HE just said bread for God to give us our daily bread in the Lord’s prayer
DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT....DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT????
DON’T WORRY ABOUT clothes was a big deal, not for looks, for need for protection from the elements.
For most us it is not if we have clothes to wear, but what we will wear, and sometimes we see say I have nothing good to wear and many of us we could go a whole month and not wear the same cloths.
JESUS SAYS A SIMILAR THING TO US DO NOT WORRY ABOUT YOUR PROVISIONS, don’t worry my child
WHY??? THESIS ARE BIG NEEDS JESUS…I NEED FOOD and CLOTHING
JESUS GIVES TWO REASONS WHY NOT TO WORRY
Matthew 6:26 ESV
Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?
Look at the birds: they do not sow nor reap but your father feeds them.
Your Father is feeding and providing things to thing of lower creation.
These birds don’t have to worry if there will be seeds....they don’t need a seed factor
His creation feeds His creation
It God’s provision
- Jesus is also saying look at the birds I take care of them and you are much more valuable than them. I will take care of you. I know your needs. I am your perfect Father who has, will, and does take care of you.
Question is are the birds lazy? Do they just sit there?
NO, they are workers
Same for us, God often provides for us by providing us with a JOB
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Psalm 23:1 ESV
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Shall not lack
Matthew 6:27 ESV
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
Jesus makes a good statement…who can add an hour by worry?
- Who can add any GOOD by worrying? NOBODY
DOES WORRY AND ANXIETY ADD ANYTHING GOOD TO OUR LIVES?
NO
-Worry, anxious literally means to “torture yourself”
WHAT DOES WORRY GIVE US?
Sleepless nights? Anybody have sleepless nights over worry “what if lose my job?” “what if she doesn’t like me” “what if I did the wrong thing?”
Worry gives us anxiety
Worry gives us depression
Worry gives us headaches
Worry robs us time
Worry can give us ulcers
JESUS SAYS WORRY DOESN’T ADD ANYTHING GOOD TO YOUR LIFE, JUST BAD
NO GOOD FRUIT COMES FROM WORRY
THEN JESUS SAY THIS
Matthew 6:28–30 ESV
And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Jesus gives another illustration. He says look at the lilies of the field, look how beautiful they are, they do not spin nor toil yet Solomon the wealthiest man in all the Bible is not arrayed like one of these and the grass of the field is here today and tomorrow thrown into the fire. The grass was thrown into the fire everyday for them to make daily bread.
- Jesus is saying if I spend this kind of care on what is alive today and gone tomorrow how much more care do I place upon you?
If God cares about grass which is here today and gone tomorrow how much more does he care about you? Infinitely more. Infinitely more. You are His child.
O PETE OF LITTEL FAITH
Matthew 6:31–32 ESV
Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
God says to us we as His children do not need to WORRY, your heavenly Father knows your needs and concerns and cares.
I GOT YOU
I WILL PROVIDE FOR YOU
DON’T WORRY
Matthew 6:8 ESV
Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
YOU DON’T NEED TO WORRY ABOUT IT
HE KNOWS YOUR NEEDS
HE KNOWS YOU CONCERNS
I KNOW AT TIMES IT SEEMS THAT HE IS TAKING FOREVER
THAT IS WHAT MY KIDS THING SOMETIMES TOO..
Dad I want ____ you will son, when the time is right, but now is the right time…no, it is not
Instead WORRY JESUS SAYS
Matthew 6:33–34 ESV
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
Jesus seek first the kingdom of God, I will provide for you, what an AMAZING THING OUR ABBA SAYS
Just seek me and I will provide for you
Jesus says
Is this what He has always done for us?
I am sure we all have testimonies about God providing and us being I am so unfaithful.
I THINK SOME OF US RIGHT NOW ARE AT ARE STORMS OF LIFE PART OF FAITH....THERE IS A LOT ANXIETY…IT IS RELATABLE TO WHEN THE DISCIPLES WERE IN A STORM ON A THE SEA OF GALILEE…AND THEY ARE FREAKING OUT
IT HAPPENS IN MATT 8, BUT I AM GOING TO READ THE MARK ACCOUNT
Mark 4:37–41 ESV
And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. He said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?” And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?”
MATT 8
Some of us are lacking peace because we are forgetting who is in the BOAT with us
The disciples are WORRIED about the STORMS the WATERS....some of the disciples are fisherman
WHERE IS JESUS???
JESUS IS SLEEPING?
SOME US ARE LIKE JESUS IS SLEEPING??? JESUS DON’T YOU SEE THE STORMS I AM FACING??? HOW COULD YOU BE SLEEPING???
JESUS KNOWS THE STORMS IS GOING TO PASS
JESUS IS NOT WORRIED ABOUT THE STORM BECAUSE HE KNOWS WHO IS OVER THE STORM
How could you not WORRY??
Jesus eyes were not on the STORM but on the ONE who is over the STORMS
The DISCIPLES EYES WERE ON THE STORM AND NOT ON THEIR SAVIOR
FOR MANY OF US OUR EYES OUR ON THE STORMS OF LIVE AND NOT ON OUR SAVIOR
WHO IS THIS THAT IS IN OUR BOAT?
HERE’S THE DEAL YOU WILL NEVER FIND WORSHIP AND WORRY TOGETHER
Not can we seek, Philippians says pray
Philippians 4:6–7 ESV
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Change our thinking as we pray, get your thoughts on God’s thoughts
Philippians 4:8 ESV
Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
MY FRIENDS WHAT GREAT ENCOURAGEMENT WE HAVE THAT GOD WILL MEET ALL OF OUR NEEDS
1 Corinthians 15:54–57 ESV
When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
