INTRO

Striving to become more godly (1 Tim 4:7-8); we have discussed 8 training exercises that will help us become more godly
The next exercise governs how well we will perform these 8: stewardship. Two areas of stewardship: time and money. We want to focus on the wise use of our money.
What’s the connection between godliness and money?
Bible subject; 374x in 258 verses money in some form is mentioned; its wise use is a matter of obedience
So much of our lives is spent earning it; provides insight into who we are
Our use of it reveals our hearts (Mt 6:21; Lk 16:10-13)
If we will become godly, we must discipline our giving.
DISCUSSION
Principles for growing in godliness through giving:
Giving is an act of worship (Phil 4:18)
Giving reflects our trust in God
God is the source of our money (Dt 8:18; 1 Ki 3:13; Pr 8:18-21; Hag 2:8)
Trust God not money (1 Tim 6:17)
1 Chron 29:12-14
Giving should be sacrificial (2 Sam 24:24; 2 Cor 8:5)
Giving testifies to your love for God and His kingdom (Mt 6:19-21; Pro 3:9-10)
Mk 12:29-30 strength = power, capability; money gives you ability to do certain things
Gift illustration. Gift given. Wife thanks. Husband: It is my duty to give to you on your anniversary. OR I am so honored to be able to give to you.
Give willingly and cheerfully (2 Cor 9:7)
“Some people give to God like they give to the IRS after an audit. Others give to God like they give to the electric company. But a few people give to God like they give an engagement ring to their fiancé or like they give to their ecstatic four-year-old on Christmas morning. Some give because they say they can’t keep it. Others give because they say they owe it. But there are always those who give because they say they can’t help it!” (Whitney 148)
Giving should be planned and systematic
Planned: 2 Cor 9:7
Systematic: every first day of the week
Every first day of the week (1 Cor 16:2)
If you give monthly, every two weeks, discipline your spending so that you can give something each week
Don’t come empty handed Dt 16:16-17)
Song “Rock of Ages”— “nothing in my hand I bring” is not about money
EXHORTATION
Jesus told the devil not to tempt God (Mt 4:7)
God did tell us to test in one area: giving (Mal 3:8-10)
