The Mentor
John 14:16–31
The seal placed upon the believer is the mark of the indwelling ministry of God. The Holy Spirit, whose person we have studied over the past few weeks. This is the guarantee of eternal life. Being a member of the royal family of God. Being and living however are the separate conditions as Justification and Sanctification are two.
With Justification there was the exercise of faith in our response to the Gospel Message. In Sanctification there is moment by moment faithing in our growing and following the way of the Lord.
It is that same Holy Spirit that made the Gospel real to our hearts and mind and then making our faith effectual for salvation who then takes the believer from napious to telaos - from baby to maturity.
John 14:16–17 (NASB95) — 16 “I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

Gr Paracletos, one called alongside to help; or Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor
John 14:18 (NASB95) — 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
34.21 ὀρφανόςb, οῦ m or f: (a figurative extension of meaning of ὀρφανόςa ‘orphan,’ 10.40) one who is without associates who may be of sustaining help—‘friendless person, helpless.’ οὐκ ἀφήσω ὑμᾶς ὀρφανούς ‘I will not leave you helpless’ Jn 14:18.[1]
The Christian Life is not lived by one’s own determination. Determination does have its place in the sense of desire, leading to personal commitment to live the Christian way of life and to reach maturity where our lives are maximized for the Glory of God.
It is my wish that we all have the personal determination to grow in the Lord and be pleasing to our Holy God.
However, personal ambition does not carry us to the goal. Without the work of the Holy Spirit there is no reaching the goal of Spiritual Maturity.
📷Andrew Murray in this mornings reading in Andre Murrays Collections in Prayer, writes in Page 377 in the chapter titled “Keeping His ways”
“Your failure(in keeping the way of the Lord) has been due to only one thing. You sought to conquer and obey in your own strength. Come and bow before God until you learn that He is the God who alone is good and alone can work any good thing. Believe that in you, and all that nature can do, is no true power. Be content to receive from God each moment the inworking of His mighty strength to run in His ways and not be weary to walk in His paths and never faint. ‘Wait on the Lord and keep His way’ will be command and promise in one.”
The very power of God within us is the power of the one sent to us and that is the Paraklatos, the Holy Spirit.
If it were possible that we could ourselves as orphans, pull ourselves up by our bootstraps to reach the mountain top and to lift up our arms in victory overcoming all the snares, traps and obstacles, that the evil one had place before us, who would then get the credit? The spectating angels would watch and who would they be cheering. It would be us. But as it were, the angels are spectating, and they are witnessing not us, but the power of God in us to will and to do and with every touchdown, they are cheering what God is doing in our lives.
Being helpless to live the Christian life calls for help from above. without help, we have no earthly idea where we are going or how it is that we are getting there and how we are to live a life that glorifies God.
There are no do overs. We have but one life to live for the Lord. There is a hill to take, there is an objective, there is a success to be gained within the boundaries of life between the cradle and the grave. Without the Paraklatos, there is no hope, and our lives would be lived in accordance to some random set of circumstances that mean nothing and will lead to nothing.
Every Church age believer is indwelt with the Holy Spirit. That is the best and the worst of us. But the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit is optional. Though the Christian is indwelt with the Spirit it requires the filling ministry to live the Christian way of life.

The Filling Ministry of the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 5:14–18 (NASB95) — 14 For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” 15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
How can we know how to live in this evil Day, as unto the Lord?
The one who indwells each church age believer is God Himself that knows all the knowable along with all the attributes of His divine nature.
I do not have the power to live the Christian way of life or to even know the deep things of God. But the Holy Spirit does. So, it is on my part to stick to my mentor and teacher that I may be taught and empower to live a life that is honoring to God. This called the filling of the Holy Spirit.
59.37 πληρόωa: (derivative of πλήρηςa ‘full,’ 59.35) to cause something to become full—‘to fill.’ ἣν ὅτε ἐπληρώθη ‘when (the net) was full’ Mt 13:48; ἦχος … ἐπλήρωσεν ὅλον τὸν οἶκον ‘a sound … filled the whole house’ Ac 2:2.[2]
To be filled is allowing no room for nothing else but making every available space for the residence of the Holy Spirit. To be filled means that your idols have been cast out to make room. It is the continuing renovation within the heart.

Teacher Charlie Clough describes the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit to an interior decorator. The decorator is scheduled to arrive Monday morning at 8AM. Throughout the weekend for some reason or other the wife cleans the house from top to bottom. You have some colors picked out, some wallpaper patterns that you’d like to use. Then comes Monday morning at 8 Sharp you hear the sound of heavy machinery out in the front, you open the door and there is a bulldozer that is going to be used to tear down your whole house.

The holy spirit does not come in to shape up the old design of human viewpoint. The Parakatos comes in to push all of it out and to fill your heart with divine viewpoint and to take total control of your life. but you must remove the control of the flesh or carnal nature and hand the control over to the filling ministry of God the Holy Spirit.
Filling means no room for nothing else. Filling means that there is no rebellious thought. Filling means that there is no space that Satan can find to work his deception.
PLAYROO means IN full measure
Filling does not mean that we are waiting for more of the Holy Spirit. Filling means that we are yielding over full control of our souls over to the Spirit of God.

Who’s in Charge?
Ephesians 5:18 (NASB95) — 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Paul uses a contrasting view to illustrate the positive. Understanding that intoxication or the use of Drugs, one drops the inhibitions and the guard against fleshly and demonic control. At the very least to understand intoxication it is understanding that something other the spirit is influencing the thoughts and the actions of ones freewill. It does opens doors to allow the direct control of Satan to destroy a life.
IN Contrast rather than to be insatiated by the substance, we are to be filled in Full measure of the Holy Spirit over the soul for the controlling influence of God in us.
In regard to the filling of the Spirit we must be also stand guard of the influences that enter the eye and the ear gate for these are the paths to the heart that will if allowed, will set up strongholds in our hearts that will indeed seek to undermine the Holy Spirit’s control.
We need not be building strongholds against the work of the Holy Spirit but tearing these structures down
2 Corinthians 10:1–6 (NASB95) — 1 Now I, Paul, myself urge you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ—I who am meek when face to face with you, but bold toward you when absent! 2 I ask that when I am present I need not be bold with the confidence with which I propose to be courageous against some, who regard us as if we walked according to the flesh. 3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4 for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 6 and we are ready to punish all disobedience, whenever your obedience is complete.
We have all tried to overcome by our own efforts the nature of sin. Whatever our weaknesses may be, and we all have them. We stand with Paul in his frustration in Romans
Romans 7:14–25 (NASB95) — 14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 15 For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. 16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. 17 So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 18 For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. 19 For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. 20 But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. 21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wants to do good. 22 For I joyfully concur with the law of God in the inner man, 23 but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. 24 Wretched man that I am! Who will set me free from the body of this death? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, on the one hand I myself with my mind am serving the law of God, but on the other, with my flesh the law of sin.
Listen, wrestling alone with the carnal nature is like wrestling with a pig in the mud. Pretty soon you realize the pig likes the mud.
To conquer the nature of sin is to subordinate the control of our souls over to the Spirit of God that indwells us. Following the dictates of the spirit and under the authority of God’s word that circulates in our hearts.
This is not just a process that happens when we feel tempted or when we need to get closer to God. NO. this is continual action. This is every waking moment. This is 24/7 and is noted as walking or conducting oneself under the spirits divine influence. But all the while, we remain in the body, it is the carnal nature that seeks to gain control over the Holy spirit
Galatians 5:17–26 (NASB95) — 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.
Note that it is fruit bearing not making. The emphasis is not placed upon sin as we seek to abstain from it. (we should). But it will be impossible to conquer the old man on our own so we need to shift our attention not on our weaknesses but upon the power that will conquer these things.
Yes, we will sin. Yes, we will stumble and sometimes fall. In doing so we have handed control over to the flesh. And we may not even know that we are out of bounds.
How do we know who’s in charge?
This is where we do examine our own fruit. checking your situational awareness.
Galatians 5:19–21 (NASB95) — 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
Ok folks its time to look in the mirror?
Where these things are evident in the life and seems to dominate the life, the spirit is being quench and grieved
When the fruit is good however that is
Galatians 5:22–23 (NASB95) — 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
The reference to the Law is the fact that there is that which is dominating over the volitional actions. Outside the controlling influence of God, the Holy Spirt.

The play always takes place on the field. And at any given moment the believer is either on the field or off.
When the ball is run out of bounds, the play stops. The ball can only be advanced by moving it between the lines to the endzone to make the score.
Personal sin takes the ball out of bounds where the play stops.
Romans 3:23 (NASB95) — 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
The correct form is that “we all sin and continually fall short of the Glory of God.” Like a ship we must all keep our bearing and know where we are in our walk with the Lord. the worst thing that any of us can be is comfortable in our old natures. it is like it was with the Israelites
They missed Egypt and wanted to go back rather than pushing ahead for the Promised land.
Spiritually speaking we want to go back to our old lives. our good times, our friends, and maybe not just for that, but we might be growing weary in well doing. We have failed so often even while we think that we have been faithful in our priorities to the Lord, but we keep falling back.
Our high ground is to glorify our King. To stand as victors in Christ who himself have overcome.
John 16:31–33 (NASB95) — 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 “Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to his own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
Jesus is the way. He has overcome. He has blazed the trail that we are to follow to share in his victory.
Just as our Lord in his humanity depended upon the Holy Spirit to get Him there, so are we filled with the spirit to get us to the place of victory.
We can’t do it alone.
But we have not been left as orphans but have the one who is with us and in us that will take us all the way to victory if we yield to His power.
