Luke 10:38–42 KJV 1900
Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Introduction

We are exploring six themes in 2022 - Prayer, Worship, Evangelism, Ministry, Fellowship and Discipleship. Our text today explores this matter of Discipleship. In Luke 10:38-42 we are introduced to two sisters Martha and Mary. In John 11 Jesus will raise their brother Lazarus from the dead. We will learn that they are truly disciples of Jesus and in the process learn what it means to be a disciple and what discipleship really is.

Body

I. Discipleship’s Essence - vs. 39

Luke 10:39 KJV 1900
And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
Notice Who Martha is with - Mary her sister. Sometimes we try to pit Martha and Mary against each other. But that is not the message of this passage. Notice the little word “also” in the Greek - Kai. Not only did Mary sit Jesus feet, but so did Martha.
Notice where they are: It is significant that they sat at his feet. Disciples are followers of their teacher, students. It was not common in Biblical times for women to be disciples. Jesus is breaking convention to teach them.
Acts 22:3 KJV 1900
I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
Paul was a disciple of Gamaliel.
Notice What they are doing: Listening to Jesus. Hearing his word.
John 10:27 KJV 1900
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
The essence of discipleship is sitting at Jesus feet and hearing his word.

II. Discipleship’s Encumbrance - vs.40-41

This is an appropriate title for this second point. It is drawn right from the passage
Luke 10:40–41 KJV 1900
But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
The word cumbered is Perispao in the Greek. It literally means distracted, over-occupied. It speaks of an obstacle to discipleship. In this case the obstacle is our serving or our doing.
Philippians 4:6 KJV 1900
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.
I understand that that is easier said than done.
Later in the same chapter Paul writes
Philippians 4:13 KJV 1900
I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.
Hebrews 4:9 KJV 1900
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.

III. Discipleship’s Expression - vs. 42

Luke 10:42 KJV 1900
But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
One Thing
One Thing Desired
Psalm 27:4 KJV 1900
One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.
One Thing Known
John 9:25 KJV 1900
He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
One Thing Focused On
Philippians 3:13 KJV 1900
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,
One Thing lacking
Mark 10:21 KJV 1900
Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.
Follow Me.

Conclusion

Which one are you?
Are you Martha?
Distracted, Cumbered about, worried about many things.
Or are you Mary?
Sitting at the feet of Jesus, hearing the word, resting in him.
This is discipleship. It is grace. Not what you do, but what Jesus does.
