New Century, Old Values
David Gergen asked the question, "How can we do a better job of realizing the promise of the 21st century than we did of the 20th?" He answers his own question:
"As a people, we must remain strong, vigilant, and engaged overseas. Because we are so blessed, we can do an astonishing amount of good in the world. Whether we are keeping air lanes free from terrorists and sea lanes free for trade, whether we are helping freedom spread and keeping tyranny in check, we must work hand in hand with other democracies.
"But our most important protections in a new world will be our old values. Nothing we learn on the Internet will give us deeper insight into the meaning of life than the answers men found in the desert 2,000 years ago."
