Finally, Christ wishes with this miracle to present Himself as the
true, heavenly Joseph, as the Chief Steward; for He feeds us with:
1. Bodily food--each year Christ causes crops to grow on the earth
and brings forth bread for man's use (Psa.
104:4).
For these things per-
tain to Him as well as to the heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit, be-
cause of the unity of Their divine, indivisible substance.
It makes no dif-
ference if it is Christ who each year makes many seeds grow from one
seed or makes many loaves of bread from one loaf?
2. Spiritual food--as we wander about in the desolation of this
world He feeds our souls with the heavenly manna of His Word.
He
teaches, comforts, and strengthens by His divine Word, enlightens and
governs by His Holy Spirit, and gives us His body to eat and His blood
to drink.
These are the seven loaves with which this faithful Lord nour-
ishes us in the wilderness of life until we are ultimately taken up to Him
in eternal life.
3. Finally, He feeds us with eternal food.
It is then we will be fully
sated, when we awake in His image (Psa.
17:15).
He will nourish us with
the rich treasures of His house and infuse us with joy as from a great
river (Psa.
36:9).
This will be His supreme shelter, secure rest, serene
happiness, gladsome eternity, and everlasting bliss in joyous contempla-
tion of the Holy Trinity.
These are the seven loaves with which Christ
will nourish us in eternity.
By His grace may He grant this to us.
Amen.
