Introduction
This lesson with will be the last in our monthly theme of “Humility”
Next week, August theme will be Self-Control
Read our lesson text in Context - immediate context
Background - Solomon dedicates the Temple of God. Previous to this the children of Israel were worshipping in the Tabernacle
2 Chronicles 7:13–14 ESV
When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command the locust to devour the land, or send pestilence among my people, if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:19–20 ESV
“But if you turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them, then I will pluck you up from my land that I have given you, and this house that I have consecrated for my name, I will cast out of my sight, and I will make it a proverb and a byword among all peoples.
Exegesis - Critical explanation or analysis, especially of a text.
Eisegesis - An interpretation, especially of Scripture, that reflects the personal ideas or viewpoint of the interpreter; reading something into a text that isn't there.
What we can immediately understand is God will provide divine blessings based on obedience and divine punishment based on disobedience
if my people who are called by my name humble themselves
Those “called by my name” are Jews in this instance. Practical application today - is Christian (Church of Christ)
Not talking about the world - already said that there will be few.
Not here to save the world. We’re here to share the Gospel
John 1:12 ESV
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
1 Corinthians 9:22 ESV
To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some.
Matthew 7:13–14 ESV
“Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
The God of the Bible is a terror the world seeks to avoid.

Christian Humility

The Gospel - NOT GOSPEL LITE to accommodate the many
Biblical Worldview in all aspects of our life
personal, family
professional, work
Any divergence is simply sin based on pride and arrogance
Humility is not for the weak - As I’ve said before, you don’t find humility in vacuum. You don’t happen upon it one day unawares.
Humility based on a Biblical worldview is a chosen state of mind and practice.
Colossians 3:11–12 ESV
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all. Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
Philippians 2:3 ESV
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

Prayer Without Humility

Luke 18:10–13 ESV
“Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’
Luke 18:14 ESV
I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Seeking God Without Humility

Trying to make your self-interests God’s mandates
Seeking God without humility is seeking justification for what YOU want, think and desire. I know the Bible says this BUT...
But what?
God want’s me to be happy.
He wants me to be authentic
Luke 9:23 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Note that denying self must be a daily endeavor.

Turning Away From Your Wicked Ways Without Humility

Without humbly yourself to God’s word, there is no turning away from sin. You will simple justify it.
This is like you finding a divine cosigner for your sin.
The kind of love God wants us to demonstrate to each other, enemies and even ourselves requires and acknowledgement that is Cannot and Will Not be done with our Christ.
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Galatians 5:16 ESV
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
