June 26, 2022: Listen to Glisten: Acts 19:1-10
Welcome
Psalm 89:1-4
1 I will sing of the steadfast love of the LORD, forever;
with my mouth I will make known your faithfulness to all generations.
2 For I said, “Steadfast love will be built up forever;
in the heavens you will establish your faithfulness.”
3 You have said, “I have made a covenant with my chosen one;
I have sworn to David my servant:
4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever,
and build your throne for all generations.’
”
Confession:
Matthew 6:25-30
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on.
Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.
Are you not of more value than they?
27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?
28 And why are you anxious about clothing?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?
Prayer:
Expand our faith Say to us that we have large faith, not little faith… Teach us true faith!
Q.
What is true faith?
A. True faith is not only a sure knowledge by which I hold as true all that God has revealed to us in Scripture; it is also a wholehearted trust, which the Holy Spirit creates in me by the gospel, that God has freely granted, not only to others but to me also, forgiveness of sins, eternal righteousness, and salvation.
These are gifts of sheer grace, granted solely by Christ’s merit.

Inspiration
Acts 19:1-10
And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus.
There he found some disciples.
2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 And he said, “Into what then were you baptized?”
They said, “Into John’s baptism.” 4 And Paul said, “John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
7 There were about twelve men in all.
8 And he entered the synagogue and for three months spoke boldly, reasoning and persuading them about the kingdom of God. 9 But when some became stubborn and continued in unbelief, speaking evil of the Way before the congregation, he withdrew from them and took the disciples with him, reasoning daily in the hall of Tyrannus.
10 This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks.
Introduction:
Third Missionary Journey Begins
Paul goes through the ‘inland country’, AKA, ‘interior]
Look back at Baptism issue with Apollos
Theological Stud, but he got one thing wrong:
Acts 18:25 “He had been instructed in the way of the Lord.
And being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things concerning Jesus, though he knew only the baptism of John.”
Baptism issue continues…
This baptism issue will help us this morning answer 4 important questions:
1.
What is faith?
What is baptism?
What’s Going on in Ephesus?
What’s Going on with You?
What is Faith?
And it happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the inland country and came to Ephesus.
There he found some disciples.
Paul ‘found’ apostles… Were they their own group?
Clearly not as informed as Apollos.
Paul questions whether or not they’re even Christians!
2 And he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?”
And they said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”
Amazing Question:
“Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed” NOT did you receive the Holy Spirit at baptism!
They said, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit?”
Fascinating question, fascinating response…
Faith and the Holy Spirit are linked?
How do I know you have faith?
You have the Holy Spirit.
How do I know I have the Holy Spirit?
You have faith!
Luke couples FAITH and HOLY SPIRIT together throughout…

BARNABAS:

Let’s unpack that:
