Introduction

- John Moschitta, Jr. was listed in Guinness World Records, for a time, as the world's fastest speaker, being able to talk at 586 wpm.[22]

He has since been surpassed by Steve Woodmore, who achieved a rate of 637 wpm.

Dr. Louann Brizendine, clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco states in ``The Female Brain" that ``A woman uses about 20,000 words per day while a man uses about 7,000."

``The Female Brain" has made quite a splash since its publication last month, and this word-count claim is one of the most striking facts supporting her argument that the female brain is ``a lean, mean communicating machine."

The 20,000 vs. 7,000 numbers have been cited in reviews all over the world, from The New York Times to the Mumbai Mirror.

The book's endnotes appear to attribute the numbers to a 1997 self-help book by Allan Pease and Allan Garner, ``Talk Language: How to Use Conversation for Profit and Pleasure."

But Pease himself has presented several different word count numbers in other sources.

In 2000, he published ``Why Men Don't Listen and Women Can't Read Maps" (with Barbara Pease), which attributes to women ``6,000-8,000 words," while men get ``just 2,000-4,000 words."

(They also offer daily counts for women's and men's ``vocal sounds" and ``facial expressions, head movements, and other body language signals"-but don't provide a source for any of the counts.)

In a 2004 CNN interview, Allan Pease said that ``women can speak 20,000 to 24,000 words a day versus a man's top end of 7,000 to 10,000."

Big Idea: Our speech needs to joyfully magnify Christ.

I. Test 1: The Christian must radiate glorifying speech.

a. Bold Speech

i. Ephesians 6:19 – Boldly proclaim the gospel

ii. 1 Peter 3:15 – Be ready always to give an answer of the hope inside you

b. Righteous Speech

i. Psalms 19:14 – all speech must be acceptable in God’s sight

ii.

Psalm 39:1 – bridle your mouth; do not respond without thinking

iii.

Psalm 71:15 – mouth that shows God’s righteousness and salvation daily because our days of life is not known

iv.

Proverbs 2:6 – righteous living comes from wise speech

v. Proverbs 8:7-8 – words of truth and righteousness

c.

Humble/Edifying Speech

i. Proverbs 27:2 – let others praise you not yourself; praise others not self

ii.

Ephesians 4:29 – words that minister grace and edification

iii.

James 3:10 – words match your lifestyle

d.

Praising Speech

i. Psalm 34:1 – continually praising God with mouth

ii.

Psalm 51:15 – mouth shows forth God’s praise; it puts God on display

iii.

Psalm 63:5 – joyful praise for God’s provision

iv.

Psalm 66:17 – yearning to praise God

v. Psalm 71:8 – mouth filled with praise all day

vi.

Psalm 89:1 – proclaiming and praising God’s faithfulness to all around

vii. Psalm 109:30 – greatly praising God even among people; not ashamed

Test 2: The Christian must eliminate corrupting speech.

a. Hypocritical Speech

i. Psalm 55:21 – smooth talker but antagonizing heart

ii.

Psalm 62:4 – liers; bless on the outward but are curse inwardly

b.

Perverse Speech

i. Proverbs 4:24 – Deceitful and scheming speech

ii.

Proverbs 6:12 – the worthless and wicked speak perverse or sinful words

iii.

Ephesians 4:29 – no corrupt, dishonest, shady speech

iv.

Colossians 3:8 – put off filthy communication

v. Titus 1:10-12 – empty and deceitful talk

vi.

James 3:10 – speech inconsistent with the Christian life

III.

Test 3: The Christian must evaluate the source of speech.

a. Matthew 15:16-19 – source of all speaking is the heart

b.

Romans 10:8-10 – source desires Christ

c. Corrupt Input=Corrupt Output

d.

Holy Input =Holy Output

Conclusion/Application:

This evening what kind of grade did you receive?

Did you fail one of the three tests?

Where in each of these three tests do you need to go back and study some more so that you can change the results?

Our speech is one of the most important abilities God has given to us to glorify him.

It is important to God on how we speak to Him and others.

There is approximately 415 verses in scripture that use the word mouth.

That is a lot.

Most of these verses give an illustration of how to use or not to use your mouth.

Those verses that don’t may give direct command on how to use our mouth or is simply speaking of the physical aspect of the mouth
