Facing Our Fear
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
Timidity: Fearful: (feeling afraid; showing fear or anxiety)
Cowardice, (Lack of bravery)
Reticence (not revealing one's thoughts or feelings readily)
"she was extremely reticent about her personal affairs.”
Overcoming fear is something we all face when we try new things, like a new job, new relationships, starting a new business.
For example, when we consider where to invest money we must face the fear of failure.
Think about this, there can be no progress in life without taking risks.
We cannot succeed in life if we give in to fear.
The corporate world risks failure every time they launch a new product.
The business world takes more risks than the average Christian. Why?
Because we have to overcome our fear of failure before we can take a calculated risk.
What’s the consequence of not taking a risk?
This story will give us the picture:
There was a very cautious man who never laughed or played; he never risked, he never tried; He never sang or prayed; and when he one day passed away his insurance was denied; for since he never really lived they claimed he never died!
It is impossible to live life without trying new things and taking risks and possibly experiencing failure. We all fail.
If we don’t face off with our fears, they keep us from living the victorious life that God meant for us.
And we will suffer the regret of what could have, would have, or should have been.
Are you afraid to try?
The story of the guy who was afraid to learn English:
Hamburger, French fries and coke: eggs, toast and juice.
A lot of people live a “hamburger, French fries, coke” life because they are not willing to do something imperfectly or try to do something new.
They will not face off with their fears and risk failure.
When we are afraid of failure that we don’t try we can’t please God. We cannot “Play it safe” and please God.
I would rather try to do something for God and fail than not try to do anything.
The recipe for barrenness is to do nothing
The story of the farmer:
Have you ever felt that way? Just wanting to play it safe and do nothing? A lot of people do that with their lives
If we choose just to play it safe in life, our potential for success becomes a barren wasteland.
If fear rules our lives we will not dare to step out in faith and fulfill our God given desires.
6 And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.
It’s better to risk failure to do what God wants us to do than do nothing.
We have all experienced fear that makes us want to draw back and play it safe.
People who overcome fear are those who do great things for God.
We have to decide to declare our goals for life in the face of fear.
Here are something we can do when we are overwhelmed by the next challenge life brings our way.
Preach to yourself:
There three things we need to preach to ourselves.
Jesus is with me, and he has all power
This is the first thing we need to preach to ourselves: “Jesus is with me—and all power has been given to Him.”
Take a look at what Jesus had to say about this.
18 Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Think about what Jesus had told His disciples to do.
So, when you need to step out in faith for whatever challenge you face, preach to yourself, “Jesus is with me, and has all power!
Jesus wants us to get that revelation. He is saying, “Hell couldn’t keep Me, the grave couldn’t hold Me, and demons couldn’t trap Me. I am alive!”
He look at us and says, “Don’t you back up. Don’t you tremble. Don’t be afraid! Fear not! I have all power!”
Jesus is with me, and He has all power!
God is at the bottom
The second thing we have to learn to preach to ourselves is that no matter how low the trials of life take me, God is at the bottom.
When we feel we have hit rock bottom and the challenges are too great to overcome, God is there.
Moses talked to Israel at the close of his life about how great God is.
26 “There is no one like the God of Israel.
He rides across the heavens to help you,
across the skies in majestic splendor.
God did a lot of miracles for the people of Israel on the mountaintops.
Maybe Moses thought, “I can’t leave the people thinking God is only on top. He is not with people when everything is victory, when everything is going right.”
27 The eternal God is your refuge,
and his everlasting arms are under you.
He drives out the enemy before you;
he cries out, ‘Destroy them!’
The word underneath in the Hebrew means bottom.
We all know that God is on the top. But what we need to preach to ourselves when we are facing difficulty is that God is with us at the bottom.
God is not just the God of the top; He is also the God of the bottom
God has given to everyone a measure of faith
The third thing we need to preach to ourselves that God has given us a measure of Faith.
Look at it this way, there is nothing that God will require of you for which you don’t have the faith.
3 Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.
He has given us a measure of faith we need to please him. So whatever the challenge we are facing we need to preach to ourselves, “I Have faith for this.
Three things we need to preach to ourselves about faith.
Faith is important
31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift each of you like wheat. 32 But I have pleaded in prayer for you, Simon, that your faith should not fail. So when you have repented and turned to me again, strengthen your brothers.”
It doesn’t take huge faith
20 “You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”
I have faith for this
This statement is a powerful way to fight fear. Because He has given each one of us a measure of faith and when He is asking us to a certain thing, I can trust that I have a mustard seed kind of faith for this.
I pray that we use these three things to fight fear That help us to overcome fear in our lives.
Jesus is with me, and He has all power!
God is at the bottom!
I have faith for this!
