The Lord in Presence and Action

Who and what is The Holy Spirit?
In a previous video we began discovering The Jewish Roots and Foundational teachings about God which are meant to be the same foundational teachings for The Bible centered Church.
Our Creator is an Individual Being, and Indivisible.
If you haven’t seen that video, Go back and check it out and come back to this one.
Within The New Testament, we often see a Figure mentioned, referred to, and see them in action, The Holy Spirit.
But is this another God, or another “Person” of God that was previously unknown? Let’s find out!
Video intro
We see that The Lord (YHWH) reveals Himself to Moses, The Nation of Israel, and The Leaders of Israel and shows that He is Alone in His Rule and Care for The Nation of Israel in particular, there are no other “persons” or gods with Him.
The more dealings that God has documented about His workings with The Nation as a whole, and with individuals in particular, He helps us to learn some particulars and specifics about Him.
Centuries after God frees Israel from Egyptian enslavement, the leaders of the nation ask for a human king like the rest of the nations around them had.
Up to this point The Lord had been their King, protecting them, providing for them by way of rain, abundant harvest seasons as they were any agricultural society, and He helped them win their battles.
But after going back and forth between being faithful to God and then worshipping others gods, perhaps they thought having a king would help them with some of their issues.
We find this request for a King in the writings about God’s Messenger, or Prophet, Samuel.
1 Samuel 8:1–9 HCSB
1 When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as judges over Israel. 2 His firstborn son’s name was Joel and his second was Abijah. They were judges in Beer-sheba. 3 However, his sons did not walk in his ways—they turned toward dishonest gain, took bribes, and perverted justice. 4 So all the elders of Israel gathered together and went to Samuel at Ramah. 5 They said to him, “Look, you are old, and your sons do not follow your example. Therefore, appoint a king to judge us the same as all the other nations have.” 6 When they said, “Give us a king to judge us,” Samuel considered their demand sinful, so he prayed to the Lord. 7 But the Lord told him, “Listen to the people and everything they say to you. They have not rejected you; they have rejected Me as their king. 8 They are doing the same thing to you that they have done to Me, since the day I brought them out of Egypt until this day, abandoning Me and worshiping other gods. 9 Listen to them, but you must solemnly warn them and tell them about the rights of the king who will rule over them.”
When God allows for a king, He had previously told the Nation through His Law, that He will choose The King.
Deuteronomy 17:14–15 HCSB
14 “When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, take possession of it, live in it, and say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations around me,’ 15 you are to appoint over you the king the Lord your God chooses. Appoint a king from your brothers. You are not to set a foreigner over you, or one who is not of your people.
When an individual is chosen to be king, the first being a man named Saul, Olive oil is poured on his head in an act and ceremony to show the nation that God has chosen him.
1 Samuel 10:1 HCSB
1 Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it out on Saul’s head, kissed him, and said, “Hasn’t the Lord anointed you ruler over His inheritance?
While this is something done on a natural or practical level, we are told that something Supernatural also took place.
1 Samuel 10:9–10 CSB
9 When Saul turned to leave Samuel, God changed his heart, and all the signs came about that day. 10 When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, a group of prophets met him. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully on him, and he prophesied along with them.
Saul however rebels against God’s Instructions numerous times and so God chooses to replace Him with a young man named David, someone who God says will carry out all He desires.
When David is singled out among His brothers to be God’s next King, we see a similar circumstance happen, as with Saul:
1 Samuel 16:11–14 CSB
11 Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.” 12 So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy, handsome appearance. Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully on David from that day forward. Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah. 14 Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul, and an evil spirit sent from the Lord began to torment him,
David is also anointed, or has olive oil poured upon him as the sign that God has chosen Him for public service as King, but it also says that The Spirit of The Lord (YHWH/Jehovah) came upon David.
Later on in David’s life, after having made one of the biggest mistakes he ever could, in a prayer of regret, sorrow, repentance, we read this:
Psalm 51:9–11 HCSB
9 Turn Your face away from my sins and blot out all my guilt. 10 God, create a clean heart for me and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not banish me from Your presence or take Your Holy Spirit from me.
We previously read that when Saul rebelled against The Lord on numerous occasions, go back and read through the story, God chose another who would listen and be obedient to Him.
In the process of that, God removed His Spirit, His Personal Presence, protection, guidance, favor, etc. from King Saul, and He came to young David.
Here David, praying to The Lord/YHWH, identifies Him as The Holy Spirit!
YHWH Himself IS The Holy Spirit!
The Holy Spirit IS NOT another Person, it is The Lord Himself!
The Title or Phrase Holy Spirit tells us that The Lord is “distinct and separate” (Holy) from all other “Spirits/spirits”, or gods.
It also indicates experiencing God’s Supernatural Presence in a “tangible”, experiential way.
It is a reminder that The Lord does not work with the gods of the other nations as they were the angels that rebelled with satan or lucifer.
One of God’s Messengers, or Prophets, named Isaiah, also refers to The Lord has The Holy Spirit.
Isaiah is writing while the Nation of Israel is yet again in the middle of rebelling against The Lord:
Isaiah 63:10–14 HCSB
10 But they rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit. So He became their enemy and fought against them. 11 Then He remembered the days of the past, the days of Moses and his people. Where is He who brought them out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock? Where is He who put His Holy Spirit among the flock? 12 He sent His glorious arm to be at Moses’ right hand, divided the waters before them to obtain eternal fame for Himself, 13 and led them through the depths like a horse in the wilderness, so that they did not stumble. 14 Like cattle that go down into the valley, the Spirit of the Lord gave them rest. You led Your people this way to make a glorious name for Yourself.
So we see that The Lord is The Holy Spirit!
The Lord also says this, for those who know that The Holy Spirit is The Comforter of Jesus’ Disciples:
John 14:15–16 KJV 1900
15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
Isaiah 51:12 HCSB
12 I—I am the One who comforts you. Who are you that you should fear man who dies, or a son of man who is given up like grass?
So when we are reading about The Holy Spirit in The New Testament, we can know that it is YHWH/The Lord, The God of Israel, and of all Creation, Who steps into our lives and brings comfort to us in our darkest times.
This becomes even more powerful when we have gone through the process of being Reborn, or Born Again into His Family and Kingdom, which you can check out the details of in this video.
In the next video of the series, we will begin to look at The Messiah, or Christ, The Anointed One that was foretold as we get gain a bigger picture of Jesus’ significance as The Messiah.
I’ll see you in the next video!
