What does God want them to know?
We are to discern/judge, but we are not to be hypocrites or tearing down
Why? Wrong judgement tears down, good judgement protects
What does God want them to do?
Judge rightly
Why? Wrong judgement tears down, good judgement protects
ME/WE
Have you ever had someone TWIST your Words?
You said ONE things and what they HEARD was something completely different.
“How did that happen???” I didn’t say what you think I said....text messages don’t help…inflection, body language, tone of voice is missing....text of “Son, come home”
I am not really asking you…I am telling you SON COME HOME…or it can be read harshly and it was meant softly
Yeah, I am a part of a family, I have friends....this happens
Or maybe you had this happen to you on the last youth group of your career, your senior youth group when the seniors were going around encouraging one another.
It is Sarah’s turn and a man named Pete happened to say to Sarah the thing I like about you is that your are QUIET...
How did Sarah respond to that, gee thanks!
I have always wanted to be QUIET…what does that mean?
Uninteresting?
Non-important?....then Pete proceeded to HURT the other girls in the youth group by saying what I am trying to say is compared to the other girls in the YOUTH GROUP who were really loud and always talking....it was nice to be around someone who didn’t dominate the conversation.....
What I was really trying to say to Sarah is that she is PEACEFUL to be around.
TENSION
What’s the point of me bringing this up?
What am I driving at?
The reason I bring this up is because I want to talk about the most TWISTED SCRIPTURE by those OUTSIDE of the church and inside too.
It is a verse they love to quote
What is that verse?
Anyone want to guess???
JUDGE NOT LEAST YOU BE JUDGED
Come on Christian you are not to JUDGE
GOOD CHRISTIANS DON’T JUDGE
Some people even wear shirts that say “Only God can judge me” implying Christians you can’t judge me and it is often wore by someone who lives a good life, right, no nefarious life.
I love a meme that went around when a celebrity wore this shirt who lives a non-rightoues life and someone said....THAT SHOULD SCARE YOU
That should SCARE anyone who is not made CLEAN by the BLOOD of LAMB of JESUS
But the question is it TRUE that CHRISTIANS are not JUDGE???
Let’s PAUSE....what does it mean to To judge something? is evaluate something to discern something.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing
We do this all the time with a lot of things we PURCHASE
We look at the REVIEWS on AMAZON on GOOGLE.
What are people saying
When you do that you are JUDGING the worth of something
But that is THINGS…it is ok to JUDGE things, but not people!!
We are in a non-judgement American
When you are at a playground and there is creepy and shady character there who is saying innapproiate things to the children we say that is fine because we are not going to JUDGE???
Or when people who run school systems think it is ok to teach all types of sex educations to kindergardeners?… that’s ok
Or when someone FLIRTS or HITS on your SPOUSE of BOYFRIEND or GIRLFRIEND that’s ok…we are not going to JUDGE them???
No we want those at the play ground to be safe people and unsafe people not to be there
We want people who run our school systems to NOT teach SEX EDUCATION…they are very bad at it
We want people not to hit on our SPOUSE
But to do that we have to judge and evaluate them
The reality is our culture is GOOD in a BAD WAY at this....our culture that says “Don’t JUDGE!!” has a thing called “CANCEL CUTLURE” that JUDGES everyone with a JUDGEMENT STRONGER THAN GOD’S JUDGEMENT…there is no ROOM for GRACE
WE are not going there today
GOD
What does God have to say about us JUDGING others?
We are going to go to the passage that PEOPEL use for CHRISTIANS are not to JUDGE
See it says it “Don’t judge” case closed
that is taking a verse out of context
I like that verse there and I am going to use it
It also says a couple verses later
You recognize them when you DISCERN/JUDGE their fruit.
So now we are to be confused
Jesus says “Don’t judge Matt 7:1” then in Matt 7:15-18 do judge
Help me out here!!
To help us understand lets look at the context…in the sermon on the mount in chapter 6 right before chapter 7 where we are at today…Jesus addresses 3 religious practices that religious people
What three practices are those?
Giving
Prayer
Fasting
What Jesus was saying with this practices you were putting the spotlight on yourself
Look how much I give, Look at my prayers, look at my fasting
But the spotlight is not to be on you, but on GOD
JESUS SAYS YOU ARE BEING HYPOCRITICAL…and your reward is a human one not a God reward.
Hypocrite is pretending to be something that you are not…you are pretending to Godly but you are not.
He is talking to the religious leaders who love to judge, but their heart was far from God...
Jesus said the measurement you use will be measured to you
-This is not what they wanted or we want....we want a TEASPOON of JUDGEMENT to US and a CUP or 10 CUPS of judgement to them.
Jesus said you are POINTING out there flaws but you, you have a WOOD PLANK IN YOUR EYE
You have all this stuff to take care of and yet you come down on them???
I have seen a great correlation to someones judging to someone’s sin
You shouldn’t look at pornography, you should not lie, you shouldn’t talk that way, that’s not the way ....the more adament they are about you not doing it is almost always tied to the likely hood of them struggling with the sin they are condemming you for.
Another time it happens is a famous scripture of the women caught in adultery
What Jesus is a saying we are not to be HYPOCRITICAL in OUR JUDGING.
You say don’t do this, but you do it.
JUDGE YOURSELF
YOurself right with GOd…not perfect
TO GOD’S STANDARD, NOT YOURS
THEN WE YOU HAVE YOURSELF SQUARED AWAY, WALKING WITH GOD THEN YOU HAVE THE AUTHORITY, right standing to make a GODLY JUDGEMENT
You will have the HEART and TRUTH of GOD in YOUR HEART and YOUR HEAD
When you see someone acting out of line with GOD’S standard not ours we have a responsiblity to speak up…not in HAMMER way, but wit the heart of GOD..
You will be able to to judge correctly
What are the two main purposes in judging?
Protection (from false doctrine)
Judge to help our brother or sister who has wandered away
What you are to do is help them?
You judge they are wandering away
WE ARE OUR BROTHERS KEEPER
they only way we know they are wandering if we make a judgement, discern them.
evaluate them
The only way we know they are wandering is by JUDGING, EVALUATING THEM
Our judging we do with the heart of God to HELP THE WANDER and PROTECT OURSELVES FROM LIES
BUT WHAT IF THEY ARE UNREPENTANT…that’s when church discipline takes place.
PAUL get’s angry at the CHURCH of CORINTH because they were not speaking up against unrepentive sin
