The catchy beat, the easy to sing lyrics, the emotion you feel when you sing along, the repeated refrain, over and over and over again… it’s a summer hit!
Sure, it may bore you to death by the end of the summer, but until Mid July, you’ll be bopping your head along every time you hear that intro.
Judge them if you want, but summer hits stick around for a lot longer than just the summer. Need proof, “now that’s what I call music” is on #82.
Didn’t really know the value of the Psalms until Bible College. Mark Moore.
“All of scripture points to the glory of God, but the Psalms bring the heart along for the journey.”
Psalm 40:3 NLT
He has given me a new song to sing, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see what he has done and be amazed. They will put their trust in the Lord.
Today we are on God’s summer hit #86.
Psalms are God’s Ultimate Playlist, curated over a thousand years, and Psalm 86 is a hit like no other.
1-4 Expressing the Need
Summer Hits are energetic. Full of feeling, passion, spirit.
God’s hits are authentic. Honest, open, real.
David opens this psalm with his need for God. Mostly likely battling the Philistines, He pours out his love for God and asks God to respond. Call and response..God’s hits are often duets. O Lord call and response… (67 times in 150 Psalms, 7 of them are here.)
Psalm 86:1–4 NLT
Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help. Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you. You are my God. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you.
Bend down, hear my prayer, answer me, protect me, save me, be merciful to me, give me happiness.
I need your help, I am devoted to you, I serve you and trust you, I am calling on you constantly, I give myself to you.
5-7 Declares the Character
Summer Hits take you to a time, a place.
MmmBop: 5th grade, Skateland, Turtles in Time
Flesh it out… music can take you to your childhood, to the first place you felt scared, to the moment
God’s hits are reminders of times and places of God’s faithfulness.
Melody- Waymaker
Psalm 86:5–7 NLT
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive, so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help. Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord; hear my urgent cry. I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble, and you will answer me.
These aren’t requests, they are statements. Part of the power of worship is that we sing reminders of God’s character, which gives us continued confidence in Him.
8-10 Declares the Authority
Summer hits tell a story.
Olivia Rodrigo’s Driver’s License/ car keys highs and lows of summer love.
God’s hits declare His glory.
Psalm 86:8–10 (NLT)
No pagan god is like you, O Lord. None can do what you do! All the nations you made will come and bow before you, O Lord; they will praise your holy name. For you are great and perform wonderful deeds. You alone are God.
Glory belongs to the Lord alone. Each Psalm delivers the same message.
At the end of the day, what is a Psalm/song?
Poetry set to a tune… (build up humorously)
cat in the hat rhymes, haikus
This is a haiku
They need a five-seven form
Haikus are easy to...
quirkiness with shel Silverstein, anyone else love reading Light in the Attic? I’m pretty sure my mom doesn’t know that book is why I never had to do the dishes….
If you have to dry the dishes
(Such an awful boring chore)
If you have to dry the dishes
('Stead of going to the store)
If you have to dry the dishes
And you drop one on the floor
Maybe they won't let you
Dry the dishes anymore
By high school, you get to the thought-provoking works of Frost’s “road less traveled” and if you’re like me, you stopped there, somewhere between Shakespeare & Hemingway, before things take a dark turn as you head towards Poe, Keats, slam poetry and finger snaps…
Jewish poetic style...
Chiastic Structure- > the middle concept is the key element.
Verse 11: Mountaintop verse, beat drop, bridge of the worship song, the clip that becomes a TikTok sound for the next 3 weeks…
Psalm 86:11 (CSB)
Teach me your way, O Lord, and I will live by your truth. Give me an undivided mind to fear your name.
Undivided Mind: Being faithful and trustworthy in belief and behavior
Jeremiah 32:39 NLT
And I will give them one heart and one purpose: to worship me forever, for their own good and for the good of all their descendants.
What divides our minds and prevents us from remembering God’s awesomeness & power?
Money: When the money flows & When the money stops...
News/Politics: How do we treat/speak about those we disagree with? Do we prioritize God’s will over ours?
Come down from the mountain… You head into the valley. Listen as David prepares his heart...
Psalm 86:12–13 NLT
With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever, for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death.
David wrote this Psalm sometime later in his life, and yet, he was still about a thousand years ahead of himself on this prophecy. But even if he didn’t truly understand how right he was here, David understood that God had delivered him time and time again.
Psalm 86:14 NLT
O God, insolent people rise up against me; a violent gang is trying to kill me. You mean nothing to them.
David lived a bold and battle-filled life, and that will always bring about enemies. These enemies are not just David’s, they are also God’s. They stand opposed to Him, just like the “pagan gods” of verse 8.
Psalm 86:15–16 NLT
But you, O Lord, are a God of compassion and mercy, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. Look down and have mercy on me. Give your strength to your servant; save me, the son of your servant.
David declares the glorious character of God… and then confesses his authentic need for mercy and strength.
Psalm 86:17 NLT
Send me a sign of your favor. Then those who hate me will be put to shame, for you, O Lord, help and comfort me.
No resolution. We know after the fact, but when David wrote this Psalm, he did not have his resolution yet. And yet, its still a statement. Just a statement of what is to come. A statement of faith.
Colossians 3:16 ESV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
The Big Idea: God gave us His summer hits to get us through whatever comes next.
