Introduction
While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately.
So He said, “A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return.
“And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Do business with this until I come back.’
“But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’
“When he returned, after receiving the kingdom, he ordered that these slaves, to whom he had given the money, be called to him so that he might know what business they had done.
“The first appeared, saying, ‘Master, your mina has made ten minas more.’
“And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority over ten cities.’
“The second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, has made five minas.’
“And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’
“Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief;
for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’
“He *said to him, ‘By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping what I did not sow?
‘Then why did you not put my money in the bank, and having come, I would have collected it with interest?’
“Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’
“And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’
“I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away.
“But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and slay them in my presence.”
The faithfulness of the Son led to greater rewards from the Father.
The seven petitions to the Father:
v.1-Father, the hour has come.
v.5-Father, glorify me together with yourself.
v.11-Father, keep them in your name.
v17-(Father), sanctify them in the truth.
v.21-Father, that they may be one as we are one.
v.22-Father, I desire that they are with Me where I am.
v.23-Father, that they may know the love that is between us.
“They” = v.3
Jesus prays that these men “know” eternal life, knowing the Father and Jesus Christ.
The organization of this prayer shows how Jesus thinks, even in times of pressure.
Unfortunately, I didn’t catch it completely until this week.
So, we will review the first petition of Christ-”Father the Hour has come!”
Then, we will introduce the serving petition.
Notice the organization of vv. 4-8
v.4 = past tense work.
v.5 = future reality.
v.6= past tense work.
v7= present reality
v.8= present result.

Jesus is here looking to past ministry which glorified the Father.
All that He did, and all that He was:
31 Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him;
This is why Jesus could say that if Philip sees Jesus, he sees the Father.
7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” 8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 “Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works. 11 “Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves.
Jesus was so intimately obedient to the Father, in addition to the ontological fact that the Father was in Him, that everything that Jesus did He did as the Father would have done.
Consider:
1 Six days later Jesus took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up on a high mountain by themselves. 2 And He was transfigured before them; and His face shone like the sun, and His garments became as white as light. 3 And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. 4 Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here; if You wish, I will make three tabernacles here, one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell face down to the ground and were terrified.
The Father testified that Jesus was His Son and that He was faithful to Him and should be listened to, thus giving the Son full rights as One speaking the Father words in truth.
“Having accomplished the work which You Have given Me to do.”
“Having accomplished the work which You Have given Me to do.”
Jesus glorified the Father by making teaching disciples, especially the twelve (even Judas.)
Literally: “…the work which You Have Given to Me, in order that I might do it.”
The purpose of the work of ministry for Jesus was to do it.
That is why the Father gave that to Him.
That may seem basic, but He is our pattern.
The whole purpose for giving us work is so that we should do it as well.
Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work.
If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.
If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the 1temple of God is holy, and that is what you are.
11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ;
We are called to abundant kingdom work:
58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
Jesus did that.
Jesus *said to them, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.
And He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father’s house?”

Jesus is here looking forward to the betrayal, death, and resurrection leading to ascension
Therefore when he had gone out, Jesus *said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God 1is glorified in Him;
Notice “now” here.
Also in v.7
Before, HE glorified the FATHER.
NOW, Jesus asks the FATHER to glorify HIM.
Jesus actually asks that God, the Father, glorify Him with Himself!!
τοῦ msgen of reference? of you it is attracted to the infinitive!
d) With the Infinitive. This idiom is so common that it must be merely touched upon here and the discussion of it reserved for the Articular Infinitive. In general it may be said that in the Attic and the κοινή the article is used with the infinitive in any case (save vocative) and very much as with any abstract substantive. The Iliad does not have the article and the infinitive, but it occurs once in the Odyssey and is in Pindar. Examples of the articular infinitive may be seen in the nominative τὸ καθίσαι (Mt. 20:23), the accusative τὸ λαλεῖν (1 Cor. 14:39; cf. Ac. 25:11), the genitive ἐλπὶς πᾶσα τοῦ σώζεσθαι (Ac. 27:20; cf. Lu. 24:29), the ablative ἐκρατοῦντο τοῦ μὴ ἐπιγνῶναι (Lu. 24:16; cf. 2 Cor. 1:8), the locative ἐν τῷ σπείρειν (Mt. 13:4), the instrumental τῷ μὴ εὑρεῖν (2 Cor. 2:13). The dative does not occur in the N. T. with the article, but see θεάσασθαι (Mt. 11:7). For the articular infinitive with prepositions see pp. 1068–1075. The article is frequently missing with εἰς πεῖν in the vernacular κοινή (papyri), as Herodotus three times has ἀντὶ εἶναι. Cf. Clyde, Greek Syntax, p. 13 f. But enough for the present. The articular infinitive is curiously rare in the Gospel of John, “almost non-existent.” It occurs only four times and only with prepositions (Jo. 1:48; 2:24; 13:19; 17:5).1

With thine own self (παρα σεαυτῳ [para seautōi]). “By the side of thyself.” Jesus prays for full restoration to the pre-incarnate glory and fellowship (cf. 1:1) enjoyed before the Incarnation (John 1:14). This is not just ideal pre-existence, but actual and conscious existence at the Father’s side (παρα σοι [para soi], with thee) “which I had” (ᾑ εἰχον [hēi eichon], imperfect active of ἐχω [echō], I used to have, with attraction of case of ἡν [hēn] to ᾑ [hēi] because of δοξῃ [doxēi]), “before the world was” (προ του τον κοσμον εἰναι [pro tou ton kosmon einai]), “before the being as to the world” (cf. verse 24). It is small wonder that those who deny or reject the deity of Jesus Christ have trouble with the Johannine authorship of this book and with the genuineness of these words. But even Harnack admits that the words here and in verse 24 are “undoubtedly the reflection of the certainty with which Jesus himself spoke” (What Is Christianity, Engl. Tr., p. 132). But Paul, as clearly as John, believes in the actual pre-existence and deity of Jesus Christ (Phil. 2:5–11).1

“…manifested Your name...” = preaching the Word.

Jesus preached whatsoever the Father spoke to Him.
And, they kept that word = the continued to believe it in spite of troubling circumstances.
“…You have given Me out of the world...” = election.
= “They were Yours and You gave them to Me...”
9 “I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours;
47 “He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.”
They belonged to the Father, and have been handed to Jesus as the focal points of redemption, just like all believers are.

7 “Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You;
7 νῦν ἔγνωκαν ὅτι πάντα ὅσα δέδωκάς μοι παρὰ σοῦ εἰσιν
“Now” = at the time of the crucifixion.
However, they still failed Jesus when they scattered.
They belonged to God.
They have come to know His Words.
They believed in Jesus.
They have finally come to the place of knowing that everything is from God.
BUT…they still scattered!!
The shame of the confusion about Jesus Christ caused these men to leave Him in the face of the enemies of Christ.
They loved Christ, but they were still “in the world.”
This is why Jesus prays for them.
11 “I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are.

8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.

Notice the process Jesus gave:
-You gave the Words
-Jesus gave them to the disciples
-they received them (belief)
-understood them
-they believed in Christ

3 And He spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow; 4 and as he sowed, some seeds fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate them up. 5 “Others fell on the rocky places, where they did not have much soil; and immediately they sprang up, because they had no depth of soil. 6 “But when the sun had risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. 7 “Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out. 8 “And others fell on the good soil and yielded a crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty. 9 “He who has ears, let him hear.”
Then:
18 “Hear then the parable of the sower. 19 “When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one on whom seed was sown beside the road. 20 “The one on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, this is the man who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; 21 yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. 23 “And the one on whom seed was sown on the good soil, this is the man who hears the word and understands it; who indeed bears fruit and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty.”
The soil of these men was prepared by the Father to hear the Word of God, understand it, believe it, and believe in Him!!
Always remember John 15:1-5
1 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 “Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit, He prunes it so that it may bear more fruit. 3 “You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 “Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.

8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, 9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation. 11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; 13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” 14 How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? 15 How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!” 16 However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.
