EXODUS: JUSTICE AND JUDGMENT ON EGYPT
RESCUE AND REDEMPTION FOR ISRAEL
DEMONSTRATE YHWH'S SUPREMACY AND SOVEREIGNTY OVER ALL
YHWH IS IMCOMPARABLE. IF YOU'VE MET ONE ELOHIM YOU HAVEN'T MET THEM ALL!
1 Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to the Lord, saying, “I will sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea. 2 The Lord is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation; this is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him. 3 The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is his name.
THEN = AT THE TIME WHEN GOD DESTROYED = SPONTANEOUS
TRIUMPHED GLORIOUSLY = EXALTED EXALTED = INTENSIFICATION = NO DOUBT
RIDER = CHARIOT DRIVER
“my song” = “to sing” and “to be strong” = double entendre
4 “Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea. 5 The floods covered them; they went down into the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, O Lord, glorious in power, your right hand, O Lord, shatters the enemy. 7 In the greatness of your majesty you overthrow your adversaries; you send out your fury; it consumes them like stubble. 8 At the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up; the floods stood up in a heap; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea.
DEEPS = SAME AS GEN. 1:2 DARKNESS OVER THE SURFACE OF THE DEEP…
STUBBLE = END OF THE WICKED = IRONY BECAUSE THEY WERE DENIED STUBBLE TO MAKE BRICKS
BLAST = WIND
PILED UP = COULD MEAN DEALT SHREWDLY…
CONGEALED = JOB 10:10 THE CURDLING OF CHEESE
9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, my desire shall have its fill of them. I will draw my sword; my hand shall destroy them.’ 10 You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters.
TO SINK = TO BE OR GROW DARK = THEY SANK INTO DARKNESS
11 “Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them.
MAJESTIC IN HOLINESS = MAJESTIC AMONG THE HOLY ONES
SWALLOWED = SAME VERB OF AARON’S STAFF SWALLOWING = DEATH
EARTH = SHEOL
13 “You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode. 14 The peoples have heard; they tremble; pangs have seized the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Now are the chiefs of Edom dismayed; trembling seizes the leaders of Moab; all the inhabitants of Canaan have melted away. 16 Terror and dread fall upon them; because of the greatness of your arm, they are still as a stone, till your people, O Lord, pass by, till the people pass by whom you have purchased.
ORDER OF NATIONS FOLLOWS TRAVEL – PHILISTIA -> EDOM -> MOAB -> CANAAN
PURCHASED = CREATED/ORIGINATED = EXODUS AS RECREATION EVENT
MOSES IS A PROPHET
10 And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, 11 none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the Lord sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land,
POLEMIC AGAINST EGYPT AND CANAAN AS WE MOVE THROUGH THE REST OF THE SONG
17 You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain, the place, O Lord, which you have made for your abode, the sanctuary, O Lord, which your hands have established. 18 The Lord will reign forever and ever.”
END OF THE SONG - NEXT VERSE IS A SUMMARY
19 For when the horses of Pharaoh with his chariots and his horsemen went into the sea, the Lord brought back the waters of the sea upon them, but the people of Israel walked on dry ground in the midst of the sea. 20 Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing. 21 And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.”
MIRIAM - AARON & MOSES' SISTER AND A PROPHETESS
ANTIPHONY SINGING - THE FIRST LINE IS THE CHORUS...
THERE IS NO ONE LIKE YHWH.
PS. 77:13: YOUR WAY, O GOD, IS HOLY. WHAT GOD IS GREAT LIKE OUR GOD?
STORY OF EXODUS IS THE STORY OF THE GOD OF THE EXODUS AND HIS COVENANT FAITHFULNESS
WE ALL KNOW HOW THE STORY GOES BAD...
IN THE TIME OF MICAH THE NATION IS FALLING APART...
GO TO MICAH 7:15-20 “15 As in the days when you came out of the land of Egypt, I will show them marvelous things. 16 The nations shall see and be ashamed of all their might; they shall lay their hands on their mouths; their ears shall be deaf; 17 they shall lick the dust like a serpent, like the crawling things of the earth; they shall come trembling out of their strongholds; they shall turn in dread to the Lord our God, and they shall be in fear of you. 18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love. 19 He will again have compassion on us; he will tread our iniquities underfoot. You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. 20 You will show faithfulness to Jacob and steadfast love to Abraham, as you have sworn to our fathers from the days of old.”
GOD IS FAITHFUL!
THE TRUE AND FINAL EXODUS LIES BEFORE US....
1 Then I saw another sign in heaven, great and amazing, seven angels with seven plagues, which are the last, for with them the wrath of God is finished. 2 And I saw what appeared to be a sea of glass mingled with fire—and also those who had conquered the beast and its image and the number of its name, standing beside the sea of glass with harps of God in their hands. 3 And they sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, “Great and amazing are your deeds, O Lord God the Almighty! Just and true are your ways, O King of the nations! 4 Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify your name? For you alone are holy. All nations will come and worship you, for your righteous acts have been revealed.”
