Salvation through Christ Alone

The gospel, the good news, Greek word “euaggelion.” We hear it often. We say we believe, we tell others to believe. Today let’s look at why we should believe and how we can explain to others why we believe, the hope we have in the gospel.
In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand
I do not own the rights to this song, now today you can find it on YouTube, Spotify and any steaming service. and it is a song located on the back of your bulletin today, if you have not heard it before, all of it is beautiful, it is by Songwriters: Keith Getty / Stuart Townend In Christ Alone lyrics © Capitol Christian Music Group, Capitol CMG Publishing
Hope our hope is found in Christ alone, The good news, the gospel is all about our hope that is found in Christ alone.
Proclaiming the good news is proclaiming salvation through Christ. It is also the proclamation of God’s grace given through Jesus Christ the only begotten Son.
The gospel is important, every message we have has the gospel tied into it. So, this morning we are going to look at
The importance of the gospel
The particulars of the gospel
The call of the gospel

The Importance

Do you want people to believe the gospel and obey the gospel? Than it is important that we understand the importance of the gospel.
It’s the good news Jesus wanted all to hear (Mk16:15-16; Mt28:18-20)
Mark 16:15–16 NASB95
15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.
He, Jesus, said to them, the disciples, to “go” which actual when translated would mean, “as you are going” to preach to all creation.
Jesus wanted all the world to hear the good news, the gospel message.
Jesus is the one who the Father gave all authority too so He could give instructions.
Matthew 28:18–19 NASB95
18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Matthew 28:20 NASB95
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Jesus spoke, spoke as one with authority, gave a command to the disciples, go make more disciples of all nations, baptizing them, teaching them, assuring them.
That is good news, salvation in the name of Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit and the assurance that Jesus would be with you always, even to the end of the age.
If it is important to Jesus that He wanted all the world, all the nations to hear the good news, as disciples, followers of Jesus today it should be important to us too.
It’s the good news, the power to salvation for everyone who believes (Rom1:15-17; 1Cor15:1-2)
Paul said it is the power of God
Romans 1:16 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
For it is the righteousness of God is revealed
Romans 1:17 NASB95
17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
That is why Paul was ready to preach it everywhere
Romans 1:15 NASB95
15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.
But it’s bad news for those who do not believe, do not obey (Jn3:17-18; 1Pt4:17; 2The1:7-10)
John 3:17–18 NASB95
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Peter formed it as a question
1 Peter 4:17 NASB95
17 For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God?
Paul addressed it, and maybe not Peters direct question, but still answered it
2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 NASB95
7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
2 Thessalonians 1:9–10 NASB95
9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed—for our testimony to you was believed.
So, thus far, the Gospel, the good news was important to Jesus and should be to us, for in it is the power of God unto salvation, so don’t be ashamed of it, be eager to share it, for there is grave consequences to those who do not believe the gospel.
(Transition) this now leads us to the nuts, bolts of the gospel, exactly what does the good news entail?

The Particulars

From an overview of the gospel. From the importance of the gospel now to the particulars of the gospel, what does the gospel, the good news entail?
Particular facts to believe
Christ was crucified for our sins (1Cor15:1-3; Isa53:4-6)
1 Corinthians 15:1–2 NASB95
1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.
1 Corinthians 15:3 NASB95
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
Why believe in the gospel, for it is of first importance, that Christ died for our sins. This is according to the scriptures, according to what Isaiah said.
Isa53:4-6 “4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.”
Christ was raised from the dead (1Cor15:4; Act2:32)
we would be remiss in (1Cor) If I stopped at (v.3) read on one more
1 Corinthians 15:4 NASB95
4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
The gospel is of first importance because Jesus was buried and raised from the dead.
you can also read that Act2:32 “32 “This Jesus God raised up again, to which we are all witnesses.”
Christ is exalted as both Lord and Savior (Act2:33-36 Eph1:22-23)
This Jesus, that Peter preached the first gospel message on Pentecost said this
Acts 2:33–34 NASB95
33 “Therefore having been exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He has poured forth this which you both see and hear. 34 “For it was not David who ascended into heaven, but he himself says: The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand,
Acts 2:35–36 NASB95
35 Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” ’ 36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made Him both Lord and Christ—this Jesus whom you crucified.”
Or as Paul eloquently put it Eph1:20-23 “20 which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, (Sorry, can’t stop there, it’s just to beautiful of a passage let me read on) 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. 22 And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and gave Him as head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”
And now we also have the assurance that Christ is coming again.
Christ will return again (Act17:30-31; 2The1:7-9)
Acts 17:30–31 NASB95
30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”
As those who are here on Sunday Bible class we know that man is without excuse! The times of ignorance have passed and He is coming to judge the world in righteousness for righteousness has been revealed on earth and wrath from heaven.
You may also consider
2The1:7-9 “7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,”
This is for those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus!
Particular commands to obey
Believe the gospel (Rom1:16; Mk16:16)
Romans 1:16 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.
and then we have used the mark passage before
Mk16:16 “16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.”
Confess Jesus (Rom10:9-10)
Romans 10:9–10 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; 10 for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.
Confess Jesus as Lord, and that God raised him from the dead! Not just believe in Jesus, specific belief. He is Lord!
Repent of our sins (Lk24:46-47; Act2:38, 22:16)
Luke 24:46–47 NASB95
46 and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
Repentance that leads to baptism (2:38) and it is at that place that you are calling on the name of the Lord (22:16)
Walk faithfully (Rev2:10; Heb3:12-14)
We are called to walk faithfully because of the gospel, the salvation that the gospel brings.
Revelation 2:10 NASB95
10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
walk faithfully, be faithful until death and receive the crown of life. - - - do we do it perfectly no, but we do it daily, pressing on.
Heb3:12-14 “12 Take care, brethren, that there not be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end,”
Don’t allow there to be a hardness of hearts, hardened by the deceitfulness of sin! - Can we as Christians be deceived by sin? YES! It is still there, crouching at the door.
Jesus is the author and perfecter of our faith (Heb12:2) and the author of eternal life, eternal salvation.
Hebrews 5:9 NASB95
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
Particular promises to receive
Forgiveness/remission of sins (Eph1:7; Act2:38)
We know Act 2:38, that baptism is for the forgiveness of sins, let me give you another passage.
Ephesians 1:7 NASB95
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
Forgiveness, redemption according to the riches of His grace!
Gift of the Holy Spirit (Act2:38-39; Eph3:16)
the gift not only for you, but for your family, if they believe and obey the gospel. It is available to all, all the whosoevers. That is who the gospel is for!
Consider what Paul says regarding the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 3:16 NASB95
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,
Strengthened with power through the Holy Spirit. To the inner man, to your very soul, to your very spirit within you to accomplish God’s good work, to be able to share God’s good news, the gospel!
Gift of everlasting life, eternal life (Jn3:16; Rom6:22-23)
We know God’s greatest gift (LOVE) and the display of it (SENDING JESUS) that made the way possible for everlasting, eternal life in His name.
Now, check out
Romans 6:22–23 The Message
22 But now that you’ve found you don’t have to listen to sin tell you what to do, and have discovered the delight of listening to God telling you, what a surprise! A whole, healed, put-together life right now, with more and more of life on the way! 23 Work hard for sin your whole life and your pension is death. But God’s gift is real life, eternal life, delivered by Jesus, our Master.
And as well as that says it, let me give to you in regular translations too
Romans 6:22–23 NASB95
22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you derive your benefit, resulting in sanctification, and the outcome, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Transition) - This is why I believe the gospel, for it truly is good news, good news worth believing, worth knowing, worth sharing.
(Insert Invitation slide- Gospel - Good News)
For the gospel is good news that Jesus wants everyone to hear
For it is the power of God unto salvation
It should not be taken lightly for those who do not believe the gospel will face condemnation. Condemnation that is unnecessary, Jesus came to take on the wages of sin for us, a rebellious people.
The slide says Rom5:8 “8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
The gospel has facts to believe, commands to obey because of belief (faith)
The gospel has promises to receive starting with eternal life.
Do you believe the gospel? Do you need to respond to the gospel today?
