Intro
Title - The High Value of Wisdom
Series - Lessons from the Book of Proverbs
Text - Proverbs 2.1-5
Parental Guidance
A child’s journey to wisdom begins with the parents.
The parents must be the first to place a high value for wisdom
How should parents cultivate the value of wisdom to their children?
Exalt wisdom in your life and in the eyes of your children
Be objective in teaching your children
objective - you have a goal in mind
Be persistent in teaching your children
Children have a tendency to react negatively, depending on their age.
Solomon addressed his son many times in this book
Take every opportunity to teach your children
The Child’s Attitude
When properly guided, a child should develop interest in wisdom.
But wisdom does not come easy.
not because they are hard to find
but because it takes a right attitude to gain
What are the characteristic attitude that a child must possess with regards to wisdom?
The child must value his/her parents’ words
treasure their words - Pro 2.1 “1 My son, if you receive my words, And treasure my commands within you,”
keep them as law and commandments - Pro 3.1 “1 My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands;”
receive them as instruction - Pro 4.1 “1 Hear, my children, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding;”
consider them as wisdom and understanding - Pro 5.1 “1 My son, pay attention to my wisdom; Lend your ear to my understanding,”
keep them as treasure - Pro 7.1 “1 My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you.”
The child must seek wisdom wholeheartedly
incline your ear; pay attention - Pro 2.2 “2 So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;”
listening carefully to advice, sermons, instructions
cry out; lift up your voice - Pro 2.3 “3 Yes, if you cry out for discernment, And lift up your voice for understanding,”
praying for wisdom
seek her; seach for her - Pro 2.4 “4 If you seek her as silver, And search for her as for hidden treasures;”
careful study
The right attitude will lead the child to God FIRST!
understand/learn the fear of the LORD
find/discover the knowledge of (or know) God
good parental guidance should teach the child the fear of the LORD - reaspect, awe, worship
good parent guidance should help the child get to know God
Therefore, the FIRST and FUNDAMENTAL LESSON of true wisdom is God!
there can be no true wisdom outside of God
wisdom that leads people away from God is demonic! - James 3.13-17 “13 Who is wise and understanding among you?
Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.
14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic.
16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”
Encounter with God
The primary lesson of wisdom is the FEAR OF THE LORD, because - IT IS GOD WHO GIVES WISDOM!
Wisdom is God’s gifts to those who diligently seek Him
True wisdom is gained through conversation with God!
from His mouth come knowledge and understanding
Why talk to God?
because God stores wisdom
because he guards the pathof justice
Separation from Evil
The SECOND, but also fundamental, LESSON of wisdom is SEPARATION FROM EVIL.
True wisdom will lead your life AWAY from all things evil.
from the man who speaks perverse things
from those who leave the righ path
from those who rejoice in doing evil
from those whose ways are crooked
from the evil woman
Conclusion
The purpose of teaching wisdom is to help us live right.
Living right means -
drawing close to God
staying away from evil
Godly wisdom has two important sides -
fear of the LORD
departure from evil
PARENTS - the future of your children begins with you today.
are you guiding them in the right way?
are you imparting words of wisdom in their minds?
are you leading them closer to God?
CHILDREN - true wisdom is twofold
you will fear the LORD, and
you will stay away from evil
