Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every event under heaven -
A time to give birth, and a time to die:
A time to plant, and a time to uproot what is planted.
A time to tear down, and a time to build up.
A time to weep, and a time to laugh;
A time to mourn, and a time to dance.
A time to throw stones, and a time to gather stones;
A time to embrace, and a time to shun embracing;
A time to search, and a time to give up as lost;
A time to keep, and a time to throw away.
A time to tear apart, and a time to sew together;
A time to be silent, and a time to speak.
A time to love, and a time to hate;
A time for war, and a time for peace.
God's perfect timing
It is interesting that several thousand years ago Solomon penned these words that seem so relevant for us today. “For everything there is a season. A time to be born and a time to die in one short sentence the author has expressed how fragile life is. And the most important question we must ask ourselves is How do we manage our time God has allowed.
“The English title Ecclesiastes comes from the Greek and Latin translations of Solomon’s book. The LXX used the Greek term ekklēsiastēs for its title. It means “preacher,” derived from the word ekklēsia, translated “assembly” or “congregation” in the NT. ”
“Both the Greek and Latin versions derive their titles from the Hebrew title, Qoheleth, which means “one who calls or gathers” the people. It refers to the one who addresses the assembly; hence, “the Preacher” (cf. 1:1–2, 12; 7:27; 12:8–10). Along with Ruth, Song of Solomon, Esther, and Lamentations, Ecclesiastes stands with the OT books of the Megilloth, or “five scrolls.” Later rabbis read these books in the synagogue on five special occasions during the year—Ecclesiastes being read on Pentecost.”
The Author of the book is related to Solomon…Due to his reputation of Wisdom knowledge and understanding.
In Old Testament Bible mentions about the richest and wisest man who ever lived. He was King Solomon
.
We know that we are creatures of time by the way we set our clocks and watches so that we will know what hour it is.
We have schedules and appointments set by dates on a calendar. We know larger amounts of time by measuring the months and years. We also know the seasons of Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.
But perhaps time should be measured in more than minutes, hours, days or years.
We have already mentioned some dates here today. The date or Brother was born and we know the date our brother transitioned.
We have a measurement of time.
I would suggest you today my brothers and sisters that Bro Bernad life was more then a measurement of years or accomplishments?
But his life will be measured by the relationships that he had with others. It will be remembered by the Good times, The laughs, The positive memories that we have made will have an impact on us for the the rest of our lives.
When we see in the text of Ecclesiastes has said, “There is time and season for every event under Heaven.
The wise man not only knows the principles of wisdom, but he also knows when they apply (cf. Pr 26:4–5). Wisdom is thus about proper timing. Qohelet recognizes that the same is true of life under the sun. Every event under the sun has its proper time, as is seen in the poem that follows.
David Finkbeiner, “Ecclesiastes,” in The Moody Bible Commentary, ed. Michael A. Rydelnik and Michael Vanlaningham (Chicago, IL: Moody Publishers, 2014), 976.
Knowledge is great, but wisdom is to know when to apply the knowledge that you have.
Each verse in this poem has two pairs of opposite events in life. Each opposite pair is a merism, a literary device highlighting the totality of something by indicating its two extremes and everything in between. The two pairs of opposites in each verse are probably related thematically and focus on a significant feature of life under the sun
David Finkbeiner, “Ecclesiastes,” in The Moody Bible Commentary, ed. Michael A. Rydelnik and Michael Vanlaningham (Chicago, IL: Moody Publishers, 2014), 976.
The writer compares two extremes opposites from the beginning of life=
Life and death-born die
Plant and pluck up
Killing and time to healing
Breaking down and building up
Weeping and laughing
Mourning and dancing
Cast away stones and gather stones
Embracing and refrain from embracing
A time to get and time to rend.
A time to keep silence and a time to speak.
A time to love and time to hat, (Love God and hate evil as an example)
A time of war and time of peace..
This poem affirms that no state of affairs under the sun is permanent. Life’s activities are changing and evolving and we go through different seasons in life. They are in God’s hands
That’s why we must be careful how we treat people because we don’t know what season they are in. Yes you maybe in a laughing season but they maybe in a mourning season.
Not only are life activities forever changing and evolving, but we ourselves are forever changing and evolving, I’ve learned that No matter who we are we may not always have good days, I’ve had some good days. Ive had some hill to climb I’ve had some weary days, and some sleepless night but when I look around and think things over. All of my good days outweigh my bad days and I won’t Complain.
My brothers and sisters we must understand that everyday may not be Sunday, but I believe, everyday we should have something to smile about, We will have a difficult moments. I came to speak to those Ecclestest 3 people who said I’m not moody. I just understand that there is a time for everything, and most of us are good people, but if we get our timing wrong…
We have to learn to deal with people when their time is right…
We are accustomed to doing things on our time but consider others and what they maybe going through..
In this complex verse Qohelet first affirmed that God has a sovereign plan that extends to everything under the sun (cf. Eph 1:11). So there is something appropriate—even beautiful (yapeh could be translated this way)—in the way everything is ordered
My brothers and sisters even in life, there are some Blessings that God have in store for us, but we have to wait on the lord until the time is right, Because sometimes if he gave us what we want when we want it we wouldn’t be ready. But if we wait on the Lord.
Isaiah said it like this in Psalms,
They that wait on the Lord shall renew their strength they shall soar with wings like an eagle, they shall run and not grow weary, they shall walk and not faint.
It may seem like a while but God’s timing is perfect timing.
It was the children of Israel that had to wait 70 years for God’s timing
It was Sarah and Abraham that had to wait until they were old and gray.
Your life is not measured by the time you spent on earth but rather by how you spent your time.
That’s why someone who is 21 can have just a greater impact than someone that’s 75 it's because they have mastered the art of timing
I came to encourage everyone to take advantage of the time God has given you
You havnt seen your best days yet.
I would say we are living in a day and age when it’s a time of Restoration
Within the past two years we have all had to face many challenges. I would say during the Pandemic we all face something we’ve never seen before. We couldn’t touch. We had to distance ourselves from one another. We lost the sense of connection, and I truly believe that God is restoring many of us
Comfort
We can find comfort in knowing that even in this God is with us.
It is a time of comfort because Jesus said, “I will never leave you or forsake you. I go to prepare a place for you. And I will return to take you with me. If you believe in me.” Even in the midst of death -
Its a time of comfort because we know that in his word he stated
4 Even though I walk through the darkest valley,I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort .
It's a time of comfort because we understand what David stated when he said
1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
It’s a time of Comfort because we understand that weeping may endure for a night but Joy cometh in the morning.
It’s a time of comfort because we know that earth has no sorrow that heaven Cant heal.
Not only its a time of comfort
its a time of reflection
As we define reflection it’s define as serious thought or consideration, I truly believe that each one of every now and then should take a moment of reflection and thought about what and where God is taking us. We should reflect on every area of our life. We should reflect on our relationship. We should reflect on our job. Are they beneficial to us and where God is taking us. I often say we should do an evaluation of everything, even people. Are they an asset to your life.
Is the Job you’re on helping you get to your purpose.
Is there anyone that can say I’m in the phase and season of my life when I don’t have time for anything that is not beneficial to where God is taking me. Your time is valuable if it’s not adding to your life sometimes you must consider it is worth your time.
The anointing and call on your life requires you to be a good steward of your time.
And I have to go with the theme and say that now it’s a time for salvation.
Two types of salvation,
There is spiritual Salvation,
Which is being freed from the bondage, danger and effects of sin being preserved.
And there is natural salvation, which is being free from hurt and harm.
I believe that each one of us
We can all look and reflect on some of the issues and things taking place not only in our life but in the world as a whole.
As we reflect on our lives and even the state the world is in to I believe many can agree as if we are almost living borrowed time?
We are living in a day where we can not get around time..no matter who we are where we are from, how much we have.. We can not avoid time
Time always has its way of revealing to us its effect and its existence.
Time has a way if speaking without Talking.
Some cases we may have our way of catching up with time..
Some may ask how can we catch up with time.
Well when you are running late to work.. you can speed your way. Speed up your dressing..
And barely make it in on time..
But in all cases Time has its way of catching with us.
We all know our birthday we dont know when Jesus will return..
The Bible says that no one knows the date or the hour he shall come..
The author Paul stated that he coming like a thief in the night..
I wanted to advise us that we are on living a life on borrowed time...
However our life should not be measured by the numbered of years livedBut how we lived..
Because there was one man by the name of Jesus that set the perfect example he only lived 33 years.
But he lived a life on borrowed time.
He healed the sick raised the dead , gave sight to the blinded eye.
And many did not understand that he was on borrowed time.
The disciples did not understand that he was on borrowed time
He explained to them that everything written about the som of man shall be fulfilled..
But they could not comprehend.
But Jesus understood he was on borrowed time
When he was betrayed by Judas
he approached Jesus and said greetings to Jesus and kiss him..
Je was on borrowed time when they took him to the high priest and to pilot…
But they could not find no fault in him
However they continued to mock him and
Je was on borrowed time They stripped him of his clothes
Je was on borrowed time when they Put a crown of thorns on his head
The led him to a his call Golgotha..
The crucified with him to robbers on on his left and the others on right
He was on borrowed time when at about three in the afternoon Jesus cried Eli lama Sabactaani..
God why how though forsaken me..
and he gave up the Ghost
He was on borrowed time when They took him in the tomb
Je was on borrowed time when he stayed there one day.
He was on borrowed time when he stayed HE stayed there two days..
But early the third day morning he got up with all power in his hands..
Power to make time sit still..
Power to make time heal our broken our broken hearts.
Power to make time turn a sinner into a saint.
Power to make time wipe away our tears..
He is alive
Whatever you need Jesus has Power…to bring you out.
