Ephesians 2:1–10
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Walking Dead

Ephesians 2:1–3 AV 1873
1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; 2 wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: 3 among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.
The word dead in vs 1 & 5: Nekros, dead. Sense: spiritually dead- characterized by lack of spiritual life or vigor; being completely indifferent toward the things of God.
The Ephesians had a religion that taught a way to please the gods, some even had teachings on how to become a god. The teachings of some of the religious groups even taught that they should be kind and united in order to attain what would be considered today as enlightenment.
1 Thessalonians 1:9–10
1 Thessalonians 1:9–10 AV 1873
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10 and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
9 For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; 10 And to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.
Colossians 2:13–14
Colossians 2:13–14 AV 1873
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
In vs 1 the word translated for trespasses is the same as the word translated for sin in vs 5. Paraptomasi: sin; trespass. Sense: transgression- the action of going beyond or overstepping some moral boundary or limit.
The word for sin in verse one is hamartiais, and it gives the sense of an act or feeling that transgresses something forbidden or ignores something required by God’s law or character; whether in thought, feeling, speech, or action.
Romans 5:12
Romans 5:12 AV 1873
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
There are consequences for our actions, Tuesday. My family was busy. I had a chiropractor appointment, and we needed to get some groceries. Typically I do not particularly appreciate going to the store for groceries. More to the point, my wife does not like me shopping for groceries because I always grab what looks good instead of what we need. I was good this time because Heather was with me, but it was lunchtime, and we were already at Costco. So I bought a slice of Costco pizza. The consequence of my action presented itself when I was studying for this message. I will spare you the gross details, but let’s say that I felt like calling an ambulance after the first half hour.
Romans 6:23
Romans 6:23 AV 1873
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Revelation 20:14
Revelation 20:14 AV 1873
14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

God’s Great Love

Ephesians 2:4–9 AV 1873
4 But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) 6 and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 not of works, lest any man should boast.
The word rich is the word plousis. It means rich; wealthy. it gives the sense that God is characterized by owning a great abundance of some commodity.
The word mercy is the word eleei. Mercy; pity; compassion. Sense: leniency and compassion shown toward offenders by a person or agency of authority; often penal-related.
Verse 5 states that we were spiritually unable to live in the presence of God because of our actions and thoughts that offended God’s character and moral desires for mankind.
The word quickened means to make alive together with. Sense: to supernaturally make someone alive along with another.
Galatians 3:13
Galatians 3:13 AV 1873
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
1 Peter 2:24
1 Peter 2:24 AV 1873
24 who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
We are made alive together with Christ, and by grace we are saved.
The word grace gives the sense of goodwill freely disseminated (by God); especially to the benefit of the recipient regardless of the benefit accrued to the disseminator.

Regenerated Purpose

Ephesians 2:6–10 AV 1873
6 and hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: 7 that in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
We are raised up together with Christ to sit in heavenly places. When you place your faith in Christ you are now positioned with Him at the right hand of power.
John 17:10
John 17:10 AV 1873
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
We are redeemed to glorify Him and to show the riches of God’s grace and kindness through Jesus Christ.
This is shown through those who understand that salvation is not by works done in a spiritually dead person but only through His grace. That free gift of God that men must place their faith in in order to obtain the deliverance that only God can grant by mercy and grace.
We are also redeemed to should walk in good works.
The word workmanship comes from the word that refers to anything that has been brought into existence by someone. We the product of His grace and mercy.

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Galatians 6:15

15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
15 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.
