Welcome

Hymn - Praise him, praise him! Jesus, our blessed redeemer! (328)

Psalm Reading

Psalm 44:23–26 ESV
Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever! Why do you hide your face? Why do you forget our affliction and oppression? For our soul is bowed down to the dust; our belly clings to the ground. Rise up; come to our help! Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love!

Reading

Mark 1:12–13 ESV
The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.
Luke 4:1–13 ESV
And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’ ” And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’ ” And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” And Jesus answered him, “It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.
Matthew 4:1–11 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Sermon

Discrepancy?

Luke & Matthew differ in the order. Neither implies a historical order of events, least of all Luke. There is therefore no discrepancy.

Putting Jesus to the Test

Matthew 4:1 ESV
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.
Spirit led him to Wilderness
Tempted - Put to the Test (Confronted?)
Temptation in Dictionary “the desire to do something. especially something wrong or unwise”
Devil/Satan - Prince of Evil - A real individual
Revelation 12:9 ESV
And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

What is Temptation?

Jesus is without Sin
Not even able to Sin
His Tempatation was Real
Temptation (Oppression from the devil)
Initial temptation
The sense of Need
Conscious of being urged by Satan to satisfy this need
Knowledge of having to resist
The struggle that arises
unreleventing & draining
physically
mentally
emotionally
spiritually
Sinners - Inner sinful desire (lust) - we have already failed
drug addict
Without sin:
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Mystery:
“Mystery is the vital of Dogmatics. The Truth which God has revealed concerning himself in nature and in Scripture far surpasses human conception and comprehension”
H. Bavinck (Translated)
We don’t also comprehend
How Sin arose in the sinless heart of Adam
How guilt is “imputed” from the sinner to the Saviour
How the Lord Omniscient (divine nature) & Man
etc
Matthew 4:2 ESV
And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry.
Forty day & Nights
Moses on Mount Horeb
Elijah on Mount Horeb
Jesus Fast was complete
Preparation for His Ministry
He was hungry

First Test - Do you trust your Father?

Matthew 4:3–4 ESV
And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Tempter & Accuser
Eve - Did God really say?
Satan is aware of God’s Proclaimation at Jesus’ Baptism
Satan is not all knowing
Jesus - Will God really provide for you?
“if you are the Son of God, command these stone to become bread”
“It is Written:” - Jesus always turns to The Word of God
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God”
Creation
Jesus reply was an expression of a Son’s absolute confidence in the Father’s loving care

Second Test - Prove your trust in the Father

Matthew 4:5–7 ESV
Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Prove your trust (read verse)
Quotes Psalm 90:11-12 & Psalm 91:11-12
Psalm 91:11–12 ESV
For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways. On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.
Omission: “to guard you in all your ways”
Satan manipulates the mean to suit his ends
These words are an affirmation of God’s promise of protection
Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 6:16
The people had rebelled against God because of a lack of water
The blamed Moses for being cruel and were about to stone him
Many examples today of Satan tempting us in similar fashion:
Requests for the Lord to bestow the blessing of health, yet neglecting the rules of health
Requests God to save their soul, yet rejects the means of grace in scripture
Requests that God provide spiritual and physical welfare of their children, yet fail to bring them up in the way of the Lord
Attending a strip show, claiming to pray to God to avert their eyes

Third Test - You can avoid the Cross

Matthew 4:8–10 ESV
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”
The devil drops his mask (read from verse)
Vision or Literal?
Satan is prepared to relinquish his dominion, his powerful influence, over the world
Literally Satan offers the means to avoid the cross
Jesus’ answer revelas that he is fully obedient to God, the Father

Angels Minister to Jesus

Matthew 4:11 ESV
Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
At Jesus’ command the devil left him
His banishment is not yet perminent
The devil throughout Jesus’ ministry provides trials
The Angels minister to Jesus

Final Comment

Jesus’ is tempted in order that his victory over tempatation and over satan (the tempter), for all those who believe in him, undo the results of Adam’s failure
Jesus, our High Priest, having himself been tempted is able to hel us in our temptations.
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
