Last week we looked at the power this book, the holy scriptures, the God breathed inspired words. Peter, as we enter chapter 2, continues his argument for holding onto the truth. He is challenging his readers to spiritual maturity, knowing it is what will allow them to stand up to false teachers and the counterfeits they seduce people with! In chapter 2 we see the introduction to these false teachers… 2 Peter 2:1-3
2 Peter 2:1–3 NASB95
But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
This week my email list encountered a counterfeit… a false claim of identity!
Thanks for the response, I’ve been working on incentives for some of our diligent staffs but I've been very busy with Church duties and i aimed at surprising some of them with gift cards today. I believe you're the best person to do this for me discreetly. This should be Confidential until they all get the cards via email. This will go a long way to show we care about them. I'll personally be responsible for the reimbursement. Can I count on you?

Don’t call or text me, don’t verify just do!
Secrecy, hidden things no one else can know
Charles Swindoll-Of all the cons to which we might fall prey in this world, the most damaging is the deception of religious phonies. Swindlers of this kind deal in counterfeit truth, an imitation meant to fool the unsuspecting. Every day, peddlers of falsehood receive nodding approval on television, in bookstores, on the silver screen—and, yes, behind pulpits. Swindoll, C. R. (2014). Insights on James, 1 & 2 Peter (Vol. 13, p. 313). Tyndale House Publishers.
Peter is talking about counterfeits… false teachers…
These are not people standing on a street corner with a sandwich board over their shoulders that reads…
Follow and Worship Satan!” on one side &
Don’t believe the Bible and Don’t worship God” on the other side!
We would run from such a person and their teaching
Peter is addressing individuals who come in looking like the real thing, sounding like the truth… essentially they use the same words with a totally separate dictionary!
EXAMPLE: I ask my wife where do you want to eat… she replies “anywhere”
In most dictionaries this means: any place with no specifics… her dictionary means: wherever sounds good to my appetite level and taste at this time/try and guess right or Texas Roadhouse
Same word different dictionary

There will always be counterfeits!

Peter is referencing from the past… false prophets who arose in Israel. verse 1
Elijah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel exposed the counterfeit ministries of these false prophets
These prophets told the people what they wanted to hear… the people loved them
Satan himself is the master deceiver, consider what Paul writes the Corinthians… 2 Corinthians 11:13-15
2 Corinthians 11:13–15 NASB95
For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. No wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. Therefore it is not surprising if his servants also disguise themselves as servants of righteousness, whose end will be according to their deeds.
He does not come warning us he is Satan… but God does warn us in His Word.
A good counterfeit is as close to the real things as possible...
Satan himself has:
False Gospel - Galatians
False Christ coming one day… 2 Peter 3 and Revelation
False Righteousness- Matthew 7:15-23 (This is scary!)
Matthew 7:15–23 NASB95
“Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? “So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. “A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. “Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. “So then, you will know them by their fruits. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’
There have been false prophets of old and there will be false teachers among you… NOTICE
They have always been around and they will always be with us moving forward… We wont eradicate them in this life
These teachers try to come in among us!
They are teachers, good with words, ones who instruct, seemingly wise, appealing
Peter goes on

Revealing The Truth About False Teachers

They secretly introduce destructive heresies
They are subtle… taking scripture out of context to teach their twisted lies
They tear down the truth, attacking the deity of Christ, the blood atonement made at Calvary
They present NEW revelation, higher teaching and greater knowledge
Secret things others do not and cannot know… secrecy!!! WARNING
Sounds a lot like the garden of eden doesn’t it!!!
Satan does not change his tactics
he appeals to the desires of the flesh
he promises greater knowledge
he distorts and challenges the very words of God
They deny Jesus Christ, they blaspheme the Holy Spirit!
This verse is one of the reasons I, along with our church, hold to unlimited atonement
At Calvary Christ paid for the sin of the world, all people, making a way for all to have their sin forgiven!
Notice… it is “THE” Master not their Master
A price was paid, a gift is given, BUT there has to be a receiving by faith
This is NOT global salvation, false teachers would love to take this out of its context and teach this!
They bring destruction on themselves...
They have denied the Master
Satan is facing defeat, destruction, the lake of fire… he wants to drag as many as he can with him
he will use his false teachers
The scary thing is that MOST do not have to be drug away kicking and screaming… they follow willingly

Beware of the Tactics of False Teachers

Look at verses 2-3
MANY will follow...
They do not lack followers
Their teaching has an immoral aspect to it
They themselves are full of perversion, sexual sin, shameful lifestyles
They teach a perverted “grace” stating this type of lifestyle is okay!
Because of them, the truth will be maligned!
If they do not promote the truth, then they promote a lie! There is no in-between.
There is no “grey” area in salvation. If it is anything but Christ or anything added to Christ it is a lie!
“The Truth” Jesus stated, John 14:6
John 14:6 NASB95
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
What they teach maligns the truth or teaches blasphemy about Christ!!!
This teaching leads people straight to hell!
False Teachers are greedy, teaching false words!
Beware of those who promote a product of their own
They take advantage of their hearers!
What they offer is greater than God’s Word
Their teaching leads to something more fulfilling
2 Timothy 4:3-4
2 Timothy 4:3–4 NASB95
For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths.
Peter is also warning his readers of the myths and clever stories they bring… they are dangerous! They appeal to our desires.
False Words = “plastos” (something formed and fitted) we get our word plastic from it.
The teaching is formed and fitted to the ears and desires of those who listen!
It is delivered and just what the people want to hear, no conviction, they leave feeling good about themselves, empowered
You sit here listening today… wow this idea of false teachers is scary and dangerous… YES IT IS!
This is why Peter is making a no apologies argument for his readers to GROW in their MATURITY, and their KNOWLEDGE
It is our best defense against false teaching and teachers!
Peter states the devastating end to their teaching for those who follow...

Truth of What False Teaching & Teachers Leads To...

Judgement and destruction...
Don’t be swept in to the lies and deception
Do not yearn for words that sooth your conscience and desires for the lust of the flesh
You will find it I guarantee, BUT RATHER… long for the pure Word of God
God’s Judgment will come His destruction is not slumbering but inevitable!
May you and I not be swayed by the seducing words of what is false but interpret all we hear and are taught through the complete, holy, inspired Word of God… which is TRUTH!
