Memories

Opened home to others
Including allowing teens to live with her family
Never met a stranger
From Southwestern Bell to Lightsey’s Farm, she was great at customer service in part due to her gift of talking
Supported the deployed
Often wrote letters to those deployed in the service.
Member 8th ave
As a part of the family, I have had the joy of being the family Chaplin. We often worshipped together. In the past few years, she was an active member of 8th ave in League
She was a Berean.
The Bereans were a group who heard the gospel and then went and studied the Scriptures to see if what they heard was accurate.
Paula often called and asked about things she read and heard
I recall the thread of those conversations and they showed growth in the Lord
As years went by, her questions were deeper and often she just wanted my take on what she had already decided since she recognize truth from error.
Her Bible have many notes and highlights
Some verses she had highlighted I would like to share with you today:
Psalm 139:13–14 ESV
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.
She knew the value of life and that we are made in God image
Isaiah 6:5–8 ESV
And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.” And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here I am! Send me.”
She saw the plea of Isaiah for cleansing and the response to cleansing of serving
Jeremiah 9:23–24 ESV
Thus says the Lord: “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the rich man boast in his riches, but let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows me, that I am the Lord who practices steadfast love, justice, and righteousness in the earth. For in these things I delight, declares the Lord.”
She knew that the relationship with God is what mattered.

Sermon

I’m not trying to stand here today and convince you that Paula was perfect
I wouldn’t try to convince you of my own perfection NOR would I try to convince anyone of YOUR perfection
See, we can’t be perfect!
Her note she wrote while in some study or listening to some sermon summarizes it well:
1 Peter 1:17–21 ESV
And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Paula recorded 3 points we need to consider today:
The Necessity of the Lamb
We will all face judgment, the Bible makes that clear
Every word, thought, deed will be judged.
DON’T make the mistake which so many do
It isn’t a balance of our good and bad to decide our fate
The Bible says that even our righteousness is worthless on its own
We all sin and God’s standard is 1 sin is enough to diqualifiy us from eternal life.
WE NEED the Lamb!
Jesus was introduced to the disciples of John the Baptist this way:
“behold the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world”
Eden:
1st sin- God sacrificed an animal to make clothes for Adam and Eve
Sin caused Death and the animal was a substitute for them
Every time we put on clothes we picture that!
Jesus took our place as the final Lamb!
1 Peter 3:18–20 ESV
For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.
2. The Person of the Lamb
Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the Lamb
John 1:1–2 ESV
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God.
John 1:14 (ESV)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
God took on flesh so He could live a perfect life and then, as the perfect man, lay down His life so that we could inherit eternal life
3. The Assurance of the Lamb
John 6:28–29 ESV
Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
John 6:38–40 ESV
For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
Jesus made it clear:
Believe on Him
Faith- a complete transfer of trust from yourself to Him
Believe who He is (God) and what He does (Died, rose, saves, and some day returning)
I’m grateful we don’t have be perfect, because of none of us could ever live up to that.

Prayer:

Committal

In the light of the promises God has given us in His Word and in as much as it has pleased the Lord in His sovereign wisdom and purpose to take from our midst one whom we have loved, we now commit her to her final resting place to await the fulfillment of another promise of Scripture. In 1 Thess. 4:13-18, writing to the Thessalonians church, the Apostle Paul wrote:
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 ESV
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. Therefore encourage one another with these words.
These words by the Apostle were written for our encouragement in times like these.
Thank you for joining us today.
