1 Peter 5:1 KJV 1900
1 The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:
Peter characterizes himself as just another Christian
could have worded this much differently
John does the same thing in revelation 1.9
Revelation 1:9 KJV 1900
9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
John calls himself a brother, Peter a fellow elder
humility - do not pull rank
we are all sheep under the Good Shepherd, members of the body of Christ
“witness of the sufferings of Christ”
Christ suffered due to His servant role, He was a servant for us
foot washing
least will be greatest
doing miracles for people
traveling all over and spreading the truth
the pope sits at the vatican all day, Jesus is out in the thick of things
the general way He did His ministry
“partakers of the glory”
another way we are all the same, when Jesus comes back
1 Peter 5:2 KJV 1900
2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
dont lead begrudginly, but because you want to
much of the faith is like this
your heart must be in it, don’t just go through the motions
this was one of Christ’s main problems with the Pharisees
WHAT THE PHARISEES WERE CONCERNED WITH

MISHNA I.: Cooked victuals may be put on a stove that was heated with straw or stubble. If the stove was heated with the pulp of poppy seed (i.e., poppy seed from which the oil was pressed out) or with wood, (cooked victuals) may not be put upon it, unless the (live) coals were taken out or covered with ashes. Beth Shamai says: (The latter instance) is permissible only in the case of victuals that are to be kept warm, but not of such as are improved by continued cooking. Beth Hillel says: Both alike are permitted. Beth Shamai says: (Victuals) may be taken off the stove, but not put back upon it; Beth Hillel permits it.

The Babylonian Talmud, Volumes 1–20: Original Text, Edited, Corrected, Formulated, and Translated into English Chapter XV: Regulations concerning the Tying and Untying of Knots on the Sabbath

MISHNA: Following are the knots for the tying of which one becomes culpable. The knot of the camel-drivers (made on the guiding-ring) and the knot of the seamen (made on the bow of a ship); just as one becomes culpable for tying them, so also one becomes culpable for untying them. R. Meir said: “One does not become culpable for any knots that can be untied with one hand.”

“ready mind” - willing and eager to go
the heart MUST be into it, it’s the foundation of our faith and what we’re doing
1 Peter 5:3 KJV 1900
3 Neither as being lords over God’s heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
very similar to something that Christ Himself said
Mark 10:42–44 KJV 1900
42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them. 43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister: 44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
again, Jesus was a servant in His ministry to us
we are called to follow His example
by following His example, we become examples to others
servant leadership - how can we serve others?
how can we best let our light shine?
what can we do for others?
Peter is talking to the elders at the moment in this passage, but this can apply to all of us
for instance, in a witnessing situation
witnessing as an example vs not an example - big difference
we can be examples for each other within the church and build each other up
of course Christ tells us if we’re in a position of power, we shouldn’t lord it over other people/use our power badly
power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely
things like this often happen slowly and subtly
1 Peter 5:4 KJV 1900
4 And when the chief Shepherd shall appear, ye shall receive a crown of glory that fadeth not away.
being a servant is not always easy
“but what about ME and MY life?”
we need to have a shift in our mindset, to WANT to be this servant
if we want to be the servant, it won’t be as hard on us, in fact, ideally, we would love it
God knows all we do, and we’ll be rewarded for it someday
we want to be able to stand before Christ and be able to say we followed His example
we also want to say that we partook in the suffering that came along with that
“fadeth not away” - our time with Christ will never fade away, never any tears or pain again
God will give this to us forever
our lives are peanuts compared to eternity
surely we should be able to give these years of our lives to Him, since He will give us eternity with Him
1 Peter 1:4 KJV 1900
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
1 Peter 5:5 KJV 1900
5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
we can see why the younger should be subject to the elder
more life experience, God has allowed the elders to have their places of authority
“all of you..”
back to the servant position
early church example
we are here to build each other up, help each other out
we’re all the same under Christ
1 Peter 5:6–7 KJV 1900
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
sometimes people say, “how can God love me when He let’s me go through things like this?”
lots of 1 Peter is about suffering
but all of this suffering has it’s purpose
when someone joins the army, they have to train, and the training is hard work, but theres a reason for all of it
similarly, when you get in shape, you put in the hard work, but after you put in the work, you’re healthier and stronger for it
when you plant a garden, you dig up the dirt, plant, plant the seeds, keep the dirt weeded, look after the plants, harvest the crop, etc. then you have the food
when you go to school, you put in all those years of working, but afterward, you’ve gained all this knowledge
God is training you through all of this suffering
making you closer to Him, making you learn lessons, making you stronger
not to mention all of the other ways that God has shown that He loves us
through His Word
through His actions, all Christ has done for us, all of the answered prayers, all the ways that He’s built us up
“that He may exalt us in due time” - and we know He will, whether in this lifetime or the next, or maybe even both
1 Peter 5:8 KJV 1900
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Be serious, be on watch, be on guard, be ready
Luke 21:34–36 KJV 1900
34 And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares. 35 For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth. 36 Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.
so many things in the world today to let our hearts get overtaken with
more forms of temptation today than anytime in history
we can see this represented in the culture today
we talked about “watch and pray” last week, be on guard, ask God to help us
evil and temptation can be accessed from the palm of our hand today
world is connected like never before, all these other religions available to people
not many colonial americans were bhuddists
1 Peter 5:9 KJV 1900
9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
we talked about building each other up as Christians
we all live in the same world at the end of the day, and the same temptations are available to all of us
now one person might be tempted by a certain thing while another person might be stronger in that department
but the Christians community is big enough that there are other many other Christians dealing with the exact same temptations as you
we can take heart in knowing that, that we can be strong, we can know that we can get through this, because many others before us have with the help of Christ
we can do all things through Christ
He will mold us and make us into what He wants us to be
1 Peter 5:10–11 KJV 1900
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
this for all intents and purposes is the end of the teaching section of 1 Peter
and like many other verses in 1 Peter, it’s written in a beautiful way
“ye have suffered a while, make you perfect...”
fits right in with and ties up many of the themes of the book
we see that eventually through all the suffering, which will only be a while in the whole scheme of things, we will be made perfect, and be settled in heaven
we will go through this suffering, but only for a while
the suffering has its purpose
and then once we’ve put in our time here on earth, we’ll be settled in heaven with Christ forever
1 Peter 5:12 KJV 1900
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.
point about authorship of different NT books
1 Peter 5:13 KJV 1900
13 The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
Probably the church at Rome
interesting theory about gospel of mark having many of Peter’s recollections in them
1 Peter 5:14 KJV 1900
14 Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
kiss of charity
of course this was a cultural thing back then
