The Holy Spirit &…Spirit Baptism
Some misunderstand the Holy Spirit…thinking it is a strange or even evil thing to be avoided.
Let’s see what Jesus had to say — He said that we are to trust the Holy Spirit just as we trust Him.
John 16:14 NLT
He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.
There are at least five major encounters with the Holy Spirit in a person’s life; you have likely encountered many of them:
1. Convincing/Convicting (John 16:8)
John 16:8 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
2. Regenerating/Cleansing (Titus 3:5)
Titus 3:5 ESV
he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit,
3. Indwelling: Assuring, Guiding (I Cor 3:16, Rom 8:9, John 16:13 )
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
4. Maturing/Sanctifying (Gal 5:22-23)
Galatians 5:22–23 ESV
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
5. Empowering/Anointing (Acts 1:8)
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
The two major Christian experiences that occur after salvation share the word “baptism” — it is important to note the differences
Water baptism and Spirit baptism occur after salvation (Mt. 28:19: Acts 1:5)
Acts 1:5 ESV
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Water baptism is an outward action that identifies us as followers of Christ (Romans 6:3-5)
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
Water baptism and Spirit baptism are commanded by Jesus (Mt 28:19; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4)
Acts 1:4 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
In water baptism, you are drenched (immersed) in water (Acts 8:38)
In Spirit Baptism, you are drenched in the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5)
Big Idea: The Holy Spirit gives us supernatural power through Spirit Baptism
WHAT IS SPIRIT BAPTISM? (Acts 1:8 - But you will receive power…)
Spirit baptism is an encounter with the Holy Spirit, separate from salvation, giving you power to share Jesus with others
Spirit baptism is recorded five times in the book of Acts
On the day of Pentecost in Jerusalem
Acts 2:4 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
With new Converts in Samaria
Acts 8:17 ESV
Then they laid their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit.
Saul (Paul) in Damascus
Acts 9:17 ESV
So Ananias departed and entered the house. And laying his hands on him he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road by which you came has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.”
Gentiles in Caesarea
Acts 10:45–46 (ESV)
And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God...
New believers in Ephesus
Acts 19:6 ESV
And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
Everyone in the Bible who recieved the Holy Spirit was clearly already born again
Jesus promised to baptize you with the same Holy Spirit who has lived in you since salvation — drenching you in His person and power!
Illustration: Get a clear pitcher of water and a small, empty glass. Explain that when you are saved, the Holy Spirit comes to live inside you, then pour water from the pitcher into the glass. Explain further that when you are baptized in the Spirit, you are outwardly immersed in the Spirit, taking the glass you just filled and placing the entire glass inside of the pitcher. The Holy Spirit is now inside and outside, surrounding your life
Transition: The book of Acts clearly defines the what of Spirit baptism — what about the who?
WHO CAN RECEIVE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTISM?
Spirit baptism is promised to every follower of Jesus
Acts 2:38–39 ESV
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
Salvation is the only prerequisite
Young, old, male, female, new believers
You do not have to become more spiritual before you can receive this baptism — receiving this baptism will help you to become closer to Jesus and empowered to serve Him
HOW CAN YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE RECEIVED SPIRIT BAPTISM?
Scripture consistently affirms that Spirit baptism comes with a new language (tongues), prompted by the Holy Spirit
In each account in Acts where the details are mentioned, the recipients spoke in an tongues
Acts 2:4 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 10:46 (ESV)
For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God.
Acts 19:6 ESV
And when Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking in tongues and prophesying.
This tongues speaking is not the public gift of tongues and interpretation (1 Cor. 12:8-11), but the act of personally praying in the Spirit (Rom. 8:26-27)
Paul wrote that not everyone will speak publicly in tongues (with interpretation)
1 Corinthians 12:30 ESV
Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
Paul did encourage all believers to pray in tongues (private prayer language)
1 Corinthians 14:4–5 ESV
The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up.
Reasons why speaking in tongues is associated as the confirming sign of Spirit baptism
Speaking is the main way we communicate
The chief result of Spirit baptism is empowered communication
All humans struggle to control their tongues (James 3:3-8)
The last thing we surrender is our freedom of speech
Transitional: If Spirit baptism is a gift from God — and Jesus is our baptizer — and He said the gift is meant for every believer…the next question is...
HOW DO I RECEIVE THE GIFT OF BAPTISM?
Have someone begin playing music
…everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages as the Holy Spirit gave them the ability (Acts 2:4)
Key Biblical accounts (Acts 2, 10, and 19) reveal an emerging pattern in how people received the gift of the Holy Spirit
Draw near to Jesus in prayer
Jesus will begin to pour out His Spirit upon you
You begin to speak out loud from the inner prompting of the Spirit rather than your own language and reasoning
Spirit baptism is a free gift (Acts 2:38) — free gifts are not earned, but simply received
You must try to yield and offer your speech to God while the Holy Spirit is working in you
You do the speaking…the Spirit does the prompting
As you sense the Spirit being poured out upon you — don’t worry about making a mistake
This is the first time you have tried to speak from your spirit rather than your logic
It may feel risky, but the Holy Spirit will help you. Jesus will fulfill His promise to you
The physical part of speaking in tongues requires your yielding and participation
The supernatural part of speaking in tongues is not our speaking, but rather WHAT we are speaking
Conclusion
Jesus is YOUR baptizer — He wants you to know that He will baptize you with His Spirit as you seek Him
Spirit baptism is deeply spiritual, deeply vulnerable, and deeply humbling
Your new prayer language will remind you that God will supernaturally guide your speech in new ways as you try to speak to others
Simply draw near to Jesus in prayer
He will begin to pour out His Spirit upon you
As you sense this inner urging of the Spirit, you begin to speak out in tongues, not using your own language or reasoning.
