Purpose of Book

The purpose of Revelation is to challenge/encourage believers, who are expectantly awaiting the reign of Christ, to live faithfully for Him despite worldly circumstances, persecution, and the cosmic battle between God and Satan.

Main Point

The dragon calls the first beast out of the sea.

The beast persecutes the saints and is allowed to put some to death.

The response of the covenant people of God is to faithfully endure.

The dragon/Satan looks to the sea to continue persecuting the church of God

We will see this beast again in chapter 17 where it’s identity is clearly revealed as the Roman empire

Blaspheming God in the Old Testament was a death curse

Likewise, the beast will be executed

These kingdoms conquered Israel in a beastly manner

The Roman empire is depicted here as the final beast (Kingdom that beastly conquers God’s people)

It is a counterfeit power exercising total allegiance and is not submitted to Christ

Furthermore, Rome as the beast symbolizes all future empires that rebel against the Lord

And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority.
