A Review of Last week
Last week was my first real, dive into the Book of Hebrews.
The author was concerned enough about the topic that He spoke directly to it, listen...
The warning was delivered as a summary of Chapter 1.
The drift that Hebrews is talking about is not just a specific warning.
This is a very general warning...
— The Hebrews, who the letter is written to lived in the latter part of the first century.
— By this time a group of people began to understand that “they” had received special knowledge about the things God.
— They would be known as the Gnostics.
— Gnosticism is a complex set of beliefs that divided believers in the late first and second century.
— To the Gnostic, They could be “saved” through “revealed knowledge”
— This “revealed knowledge”made those who were disciples of Gnosticism just a bit smarter that the ordinary follower of Jesus.
— Gnosticism denied the resurrection of Christ so therefore all of orthodox Christian faith was dismissed.
— This style of cult, that was it was, a cult.
Still exists today.
In the form of Christian Scientists, Mormons, and most of the mind science, and the New Age movement.
The “Spiritual Drift” that Jesus spoke about while sitting with his disciples.
Jesus was preparing the disciples for the coming confusion and separation that Gnosticism caused.
— Today Gnosticism, is still evident in our society.
That’s the diagnosis, the treatment… The Word of God!
This error and the 100’s of other similar groups that attempt to make our faith
FAITH + “Works” = A saved, redeemed Christian
FAITH + “Traditions” = A saved, redeemed Christian.
Instead...
FAITH + Nada, zero, nothing = A REDEEMED DAUGHTER OR SON OF GOD [period].
Be diligent with your faith… Never sitting still, never take advantage, finding ways to increase our true knowledge of God, Jesus, The Spirit.
BECOME A 2022 VERSION OF THE FIRST CHRISTIANS!
How is that possible!!!
Return to the basics
TEACHING, LEARNING, SUPPORTING, AND OF COURSE POTLUCKS, CORRECTING ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS AND SIN!
The biblical term is exhortation!
Watch what you take into your mind, your soul, and your body.
— You are a Temple of The Holy Spirit.
Let get to our message for today!
This is a continuation of our last weeks message.
My plan is to preach through the rest of the book in this verse-by-verse fashion.
Pray for me won’t you… I’m on a learning journey just like you are.
You and I are at different places but our goal is the same… Heaven for us and as many other folks that we can get there!
This week and maybe for this whole study I’m going to be looking at a few different versions of scripture to help us understand which way is up.
Let’s look at our passage for today.
I picked the New Living Translation or NLT for its clear-ness if that’s a word..
HEbrews 2.14-18.
Okay that was a great big bite… let’s get a bit smaller now.
Verse 14
Because God’s children are made of flesh and blood, the eternal Son of God entered human life—he became a man of flesh and blood (v.
14).
Why?
To die and “to make away for our sin to be covered, to make a way of forgiveness, for the sins of the people.”
That’s our Jesus… You may be asking why?
Why would anyone, even Jesus come.
He came because is was His destiny.
From the foundation of the world, we needed a redeemer.
God saw this, knew this… So sent his only begotten son, Jesus to this work.
Let’s just stop there for a minute...
The idea here is that the Lord Jesus, in His work on Calvary’s Cross, did not provide for the salvation of fallen angels but for the salvation of fallen human beings.
As we discussed last week, He passed by the superior being, an Angel to save an inferior being, man.
He gets the glory in taking an inferior being and raising him to an exalted position in Christ Jesus, that only happens when we draw close to Jesus and God and pledge to become a disciple.
Now Verse 17
— God in heaven cannot die, but he became a man named Jesus precisely to die to “save his people from their sins.
— Jesus’ death accomplishes two things, according to this passage.
First, his death defeats the Devil.
— The Devil is a fallen angel, a wayward creature of God still subject to God’s sovereign power.
Nevertheless, Scripture calls him the “ruler of this world.”
— Like I have said… You and I and every believer past, present and future is a citizen of Heaven.
— We are currently on a lifetime visa to the earth.
Our purpose is to reach as many as possible with the Gospel, show the error of their ways and pray them into Heaven!
— Second, Jesus’ death delivers his people.
Through the cross he rescues “all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery”
— God’s perfect love in Christ “casts out fear” of punishment on the last day.
The writer to the Hebrews frames the Son’s incarnation as the necessary precondition for him to die on behalf of his people, delivering them from satan.
Verse 18
We have not spent much time talking about this idea of temptation
Temptation (by definition) — occurs when satan uses life’s circumstances to confront people with the opportunity to sin.
To choose an action that goes against the character and will of God.
Temptation focuses on causing Christians to fall away from faith in Christ.
The biblical example is this:
After Jesus was baptized, satan took him to a mountain top and began to tempt him.
With food and water, power and majesty.
“Although tempted, he did not sin!”
OK… Here comes the super important part of the message...
So What? -
How do we deal with TEMPTATION
— This may sound to simplistic but we need to open the Word...
In your mind and in your person understand that Jesus is our brother, but he is also savior, judge and redeemer.
Everyone is TEMPTED!!! Everyone, even Jesus was tempted [He remained sinless].
We have a much different track record.
I’m not going to stand here and tell you that I have fought off all of the temptation that satan has or is pouring on me.
I have fought the fight and won some battles and lost some battles.
We have a way out of temptation… He will provide a way of escape, that you may be able to either endure the trial or completely concur it.!
— Jesus’ favor is certainly not presented in terms of past generosity only.
He is present and active in our lives today, tomorrow and forever
— Hebrews, gives us a prescription to deal with your sin and transgressions.
Now we just need to get the prescription, take it (all of it) and then begin to work it.
Communion
We are going to transition to Communion now.
If the servers would come forward

During this time, take some time personally to ask God for forgiveness for those sins that you are aware of and those sins you are not.
God will chose to remember your sins no more...
