1st of 3 Repetitions: God's Honour

  • YOUR name be hallowed
  • YOUR kingdom come
  • YOUR will be done

2nd set of 3 Repetitions: Man's Interest

  • Give US our daily bread
  • Lead US not into temptation
  • Deliver US from the evil one

"While we ordinarily first bring our own needs to God in prayer, and then think of what belongs to God and His interests, the Master reverses the order. The lesson is of more importance than we think. In true worship the Father must be first, must be all. The sooner I learn to forget about myself in the desire He may be glorified, the richer will the blessings be that prayer will bring to myself. No one ever loses by what he sacrifices for the Father." ---Andrew Murray

IV. What Does It Mean to Hallow God's Name?

  • Aorist, passive, imperative, third person, singular mood: "Let your name be hallowed" or "Let your name be treated with reverance"
  • This transforms a demand/command into an appeal, a request to our Father God.

A. Believe God

Then the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, "Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them." ---Num 20:12, NKJV

We may say we believe and we trust, but our actions reveal the truth.

B. Fear God

12 God warned Isaiah not to be like the people of Israel. "Do not say, 'a conspiracy,' concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. 13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear. And let Him be your dread." ---Isa 8:12-13, NKJV

"We fear men so much because we fear God so little."---William Gurnall

C. Obey God

31 Therefore you shall keep My commandments, and perform them: I am the Lord. 32 You shall not profane My holy name, but I will be hallowed amnong the children of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you.---Lev 22:31-32

Come, let's build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top will reach into heaven, and let's make a name for ourselves; otherwise, we will be scattered abroad over the face of all the earth.---Gen 11:4

"Instant obedience is the only kind of obedience there is; delayed obedience is disobedience. Whoever strives to withdraw from obedience, withdraws from Grace."---Thomas A. Kampis

  • Have we strived to keep and uphold God's commandments and instructions in our lives?
  • Have we somehow slipped and compromised?

D. Glorify God

And Moses said to Aaron, "This is what Jehovah spoke, saying, 'I will be hallowed in them that come near me, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And Aaron was silent. ---Lev 10:3, DARBY

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear. ---1 Pet 3:15, NKJV

"God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.---John Piper

"In commanding us to glorify Him, God is inviting us to enjoy him. God wants our worship to be motivated by love, thanksgiving and delight, not duty. ---C. S. Lewis

Challenge

1. Make a fresh commitment to get to know your Maker at a whole new level and depth.

  • Would you want to know the God of the Bible and experience Him in a deeper manner?
  • Are you hungry to know God more and learn about His characters?
  • Have you been reading God's love letters to you, i.e. the Bible, regularly?

2. Resolve in your heart to "hallow the name of God" with your actions and attitudes

  • Is God glorified and honoured in your lives? Do you trust God wholeheartedly, and placed your unwavering faith in Him?
  • Do you fear God reverentially and obey Him unreservedly? Has God been exalted, or have the problems and challenges been magnified in your life?
  • Where are you at this point of your life?

"Hallowed Be Your Name"

O Father God, help me to live in such a way that your name is made great in my life. May you be glorified, exalted, and your reputation be increased through the way I live my life. Help me, Lord!
