21 For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
22 Now if I live on in the flesh, this means fruitful work for me; and I don’t know which one I should choose.
23 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better—
24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
25 Since I am persuaded of this, I know that I will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
26 so that, because of my coming to you again, your boasting in Christ Jesus may abound.
27 Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel,
28 not being frightened in any way by your opponents. This is a sign of destruction for them, but of your salvation—and this is from God.
29 For it has been granted to you on Christ’s behalf not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
30 since you are engaged in the same struggle that you saw I had and now hear that I have.
Background:
Introduction:
He Created Us (and thereby has given us purpose)
General
3 Acknowledge that the Lord is God. He made us, and we are his— his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Specific
13 For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well.
15 My bones were not hidden from you when I was made in secret, when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless; all my days were written in your book and planned before a single one of them began.
(Mention Jeremiah)
Created by Him and for Him
16 For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities— all things have been created through him and for him.
we were created for His glory
we are all unique (gift, talents)
Christ Is Now The Motivation For Our Lives
in the text.....
21 For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
Paul was in conflict
23 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ—which is far better—
24 but to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
he could not determine his ultimate fate anyway
what was the motivation for his “options”? Christ
for the believer death is not loss but gain. why? complete relationship with Christ (though we do not wish to die)
living is Christ. Our motivation in all matter ought to be this very notion. What is the motivation of our decisions? Do we just do to do? Or do we do to honor him?
27 Just one thing: As citizens of heaven, live your life worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or am absent, I will hear about you that you are standing firm in one spirit, in one accord, contending together for the faith of the gospel,
we must constantly check our motivations
Philippians 1:20 (CSB)
20 My eager expectation and hope is that I will not be ashamed about anything, but that now as always, with all courage, Christ will be highly honored in my body, whether by life or by death.
We can’t do it in our own strength
4 Remain in me, and I in you. Just as a branch is unable to produce fruit by itself unless it remains on the vine, neither can you unless you remain in me.
abide in Christ through practicing spiritual disciplines
SOAP Method (application is so important)
do this this week. how can i apply this verse?
Do It For His Glory (this is the aim of the believer)
31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God.
10 For am I now trying to persuade people, or God? Or am I striving to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
