Background

Joshua having led the Israelites have conquered much of Canaan, and now the 2 1/2 tribes were returning to the land that was first allocated to them before the crossing over the Jordan.
If you look at the map, you can see that these 2 1/2 tribes were going back where the whole of Israel has entered. The 2 1/2 tribes have left their family behind on the western side of the Jordan River, and they were now parting ways.
We also must recognise that in the traditions and ritual of the Jews, they were to worship where the tabernacle was, and this was also the place where the Ark of the Covenant will be. Basically, physically it will be the place where God is to be worshiped.
