As I began to study this text I saw saw two contrasting images of Peter and the other disciples.
Most who have taught this Text have always taught it as watch and pray.
But watch and pray is actually the lesson that follows this section.
Jesus actually said
Jesus was asking something very specific here..
Historically it was customary to stay up late curing the week of passover to share and ponder upon the good things God had done during that week.
1. Rejoice and think upon those good things of God.
a. When the disciples took their gaze off of the Goodness of God their perspective begin to shift to the Flesh.
2. Jesus called them to watch.
during times of great peril or impending danger a watchman was called.
a. In the context of the Text we need to understand that they were being told to focus on the true enemy at hand “Their own flesh” in order to preserve and be in alignment with the Will of God. (Watch and Pray)
3. Focus on your relationship with God.
a. if you to not proactively Choose to obey God and Abide in Him then you will disobey and fall victim to the carnal nature.
b. the Disciples were tired as verified by the text saying they had heavy eyes.
c. they needed to mortify and crucify the deeds of the flesh and focus on Jesus. they needed to diligently choose to be about the work of the father as Jesus had shown them time and time again.
The outcome of their immaturity and disobedience resulted in the eventual betrayal of Jesus and fleeing from Him in His greatest hour of need.
Acts 1:3 ESV
He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
Acts 1:4 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me;
Acts 1:5 ESV
for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:6 ESV
So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”
Acts 1:7 ESV
He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority.
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
Acts 1:9 ESV
And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
Acts 1:10 ESV
And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes,
Acts 1:11 ESV
and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”
4. expectation on Jesus.
a. Jesus tells the disciples to Go into jerusalem and wait until the Holy Spirit Comes in fullness.
b. after He ascended this is a totally different people.
c. they were standing waiting and wondering in expectation.
Acts 2:1 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place.
Acts 2:2 ESV
And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting.
Acts 2:3 ESV
And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.
Acts 2:4 ESV
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5. Will we focus on Jesus?
a. will our gaze be fixed on Jesus or will we miss Gods best because were looking at other things that distract us.
b. Perspective is everything in our walk with Jesus
why is that? Because we are called to fix our gaze on heavenly things above and follow Jesus no matter what we see.
c. the reality is that no one prayed like Jesus!!!!! yet even His prayer life could not sustain a people who were not focused intently on God for themselves!!!!!!!!
