Understanding the Main Point

God must punish sin—we are sinners. But through God’s love, Christ took on our punishment, so fear God.
God must punish sinners-David explains that God is not a God who will stand in the presence of sinners. Evil may not dwell within him. God hates evildoers and will destroy those who speak lies.
We are sinners-We lie, we are violent and deceitful. Here David is talking about his pursuers, which I think is us in this story. We are the one who pursue the anointed one. But also, David is all of these things. He is speaking of Absolom and his men pursuing him, but also David lies to Uriah, he is obviously violent getting him killed and he is deceitful (Christ connection). He is not the final anointed one because of this.
But through God’s love—David knows that still the only way he can enter God’s presence is because of God’s love. God’s love that stays firm even when David is sinning towards him. This is the gospel, only through God’s love that comes by his grace can we enter God’s presence. (possibly talk about God’s love even with those who sin against him). Absolom will not win because of God’s love.
So fear God- (this also includes entering God’s presence in the temple) Out of the result of God’s love we can worship him in his presence and then the result is fearing him (Proverbs 1). The result of God’s love should be fear which is faith and repentance.
Fear of the Lord- As a description of personal piety—the act of worshiping and obeying Yahweh. In Deuteronomy 5:29, God declares to Moses His desire that the people would fear Him enough that they would obey His commandments. “Fear” can be expressed as (positive) obedience caused by reverence for Yahweh. Fear leads to following God’s commands.
(Gospel app) But then, by who is David able to enter into God’s presence? Who is the Lord of the king? David is able to enter into God’s presence, through God’s love, because David trusts God’s covenant with him. That through David’s offspring, the messiah will come, the true king of kings. Friends, if David had to enter God’s presence through this king of kings, then so do we. We too have sinned against God, we have murdered in our heart, lied with our lips, deceived with our actions. You can even see the punishment for these sins in our passage: eternal destruction. God hates our sin and justly punishes sin by death. All those who sin have a just punishment of separation from God. David entered into God’s presence by his own offspring, but how do we, thousands of years later have a relationship with God? The same way! David’s offspring has came in Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus lived the life of righteousness that David could not live and that we could not live. You may say that is all well and good, some man lived a perfect life two thousand years ago. But what if I told you this man, was God incarnate, this man was God’s only begotten son who came to live the life we could not live. He did! Then, our punishment: death because of our sins, he took for us! Jesus died on a Roman cross, standing in man’s place because he is man. He did not stay dead though, because he is also God, so he is able to withstand the wrath of God. He rose from the dead and is now at the right hand of the father, mediating for those he has saved. Those he has saved and then repent from their sin like David and trust in Christ to enter into the presence of God.
