Matthew 19: 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
To begin with as we glint, gleam, and gaze at this glorious text we find some good godly facts and holy principles to live by in the Matthew 19:26 text. This unique story is found in three of the four Gospels , it’s in Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Can I tell the story?
And so the bible says that the rich young ruler came running to Jesus. He had Manners and Morals. And that’s the first thing I want to talk about
1. Manners and Morals Today when you see a young person exhibiting manners and good morals we ought to commend them and try to help them make it in life. And we ought to help our children have good manners and good morals. Listen, We use to have to say Yes mamn’, No Mamn’, yes sir, and no sir when talking to grown ups. Amen?
So the rich young ruler comes to Jesus with manners and morals running, kneeling, bowing, and seeking spiritual validation on the subject of eternal life. In all three Gospels the rich young ruler says Good Master. Good Master 2x brothers and sisters By using the terms Good Master the young ruler unknowingly is insulting Jesus and the orthodoxy of the priesthood.Let me explain it, because there’s a problem with him using those flattering words. And Just because somebody is saying nice things to you don’t mean that their motives are pure or holy. Amen.
Because if the young ruler had truly research the matter he would have never said Good and Master in the same sentence. The word Master means teacher. The word teacher in the Greek vernacular is word didacte. Alright I knew that but what I gleamed from this text that I didn’t know was that no bonifide, no real deal, no authentic religious teacher would ever allow anybody to tell them that they were a good teacher or a good preacher because the word good was reserved for God
Yes indeed.
We always say that God is Good and it does something for us, it makes us feel good inside right? Nobody in their right mind says Man is good… We just don’t say that because we know that the bible says all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. So the word Good is reserved for God Almighty. It’s for The Good Lord Yeah 3x
and then the fact that the rich young ruler came running to Jesus was a good sign for young people. Believe it or not ,,, but church is not the most popular thing to young folk in this day and age. So we’d better think innovative strategies swavey and savvy and fly and hip and lit and dope idea to make church more palatable for young folk or they’ll leave church behind and we’ll end up with a lost generation. The children are important to me.
The phrase the rich young ruler came Running to Jesus is good because he came for Spiritual Things is good. But!!! the rich young ruler’s motive, was methodical, and his motivation was mindfully meticulous
BUT IT WAS ALL WRONG!!!
Our motivation has to be deeper than surface level Christianity.
I’m so glad that Jesus loved me because I see myself in the text. When I was a teenager I wasn’t seeing church or Jesus in the right way. I just went to church to see the girls but I was a teenager. When I was a child I spoke like a child thought like a child acted like a child but when I became a man I put away childish things.
And the Lord gives us time to straighten. The Good Lord knew that some of our motives were not right, and through the process of time the spirit of God got a hold on us and straighten us up.
And sometimes before we straighten up we could have Superficial Religious Views about church. That means that church could be more of a social experience that views Salvation in a Shallow way.
And brothers and sisters there is nothing more important than our souls.
And Then there was another flaw that resulted in failure that fizzled before the finish for the rich young ruler. He thought that he could earn salvation through works or merits.
But you can’t hold him too much for that because people’s of that day commonly thought that good works was a way to get salvation and then go to heaven.
Brothers and sisters this is a bad way of thinking because it leads to a superficial view of sin.yeah 3x because a superficial view of sin make me think that if my good works out weigh my bad deeds, I’ll somehow go to heaven.
The truth is we are all saved by God’s Amazing Grace not by any works of righteousness that we do. Jesus told the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Someone once said “I don’t obey God because I have too I obey God because I love him.” Because Obedience is better than sacrifice church. And so in our theme text the rich young ruler began a discourse that lead to a conversation with Jesus. Jesus said keep my commandments and live now and forever too.... It sounds simple,,, so the rich young ruler answers and says which commandments Jesus? In Matthew 19 and verse 18. Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19. Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Jesus in this text is speaking like an OT Prophet Preacher Teacher Leader because He’s rehearsing the Ten Commandments that God gave Moses on Mt Sinai.
And Instead of the rich young ruler feeling the gravity and the brevity and the seriousness of Jesus’ Spiritual Directives. He say in essence Oh Yeah I’ve been doing all of that since I was a little boy, In other words what else, give me something harder.
Mind you now thousands of Israelites died for being disobedient to the ten commandments back in biblical antiquity, but yet this young rookie says Oh yeah for sure I’ve been good and righteous and holy. And church anytime we freely say Oh yeah I’ve kept all of God’s commandments, you’re saying that I’m good, I’m righteous, and I’m holy and I’m on God’s level. I did it all on my own volition. I don’t know about you but I’m not that brave to say that.
And so the bible says Jesus beholding him loving him said but son it’s one thing that you lack.
One thing!!!
“One Thing” I said to myself Lord just One thing wrong. wow I believe that I could make it to heaven if all I had wrong with me was One Thing. Church when you look in the mirror if you’re honest we can see more than One thing wrong with ourselves. And I pondered over this Supernatural Statement from Jesus, “There’s One thing that you’ve got wrong with you son.”
Jesus had Omniscient wisdom, meaning Jesus knew the precise thing that would strike a nerve in the rich young ruler. Because Wisdom is the ability along with Spiritual discernment, Godly Justice, and Pious prudence have the ability to give the correct answer in every situation.
Jesus knew his problem!!! and Jesus in 2022 knows our problems. Jesus said to the rich young ruler “go sell everything that you have” .... What??? Then Jesus said “give it all to the poor”.... What??? Then take up your cross what???? and follow Me … What??? Then you shall have treasure up in heaven.... What???? the rich young ruler said in essence “Man Jesus you must be crazy”
Brothers and sisters rich people don’t give away all their money.... Rich people make more money with the money they already have. They don’t give it away. “People may not always tell you how they feel but they will always show you.” Look at Matthew 19: 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. It seems to me that this was the only person who had seemingly come to Jesus in sincerity and walked away lost and on his way to hell.
The text tell us that because Jesus let’s us know what happens when we flat out and out reject God. Verse 23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
I wanted to feel bad for the rich young ruler because in these days and time most rich people don’t even believe in God nor do they respect the word of God.
Things that would make you and I pause and say don’t do that that’s not godly, rich men has no filter no fear no reverence no conscious no guide no governing moral or spiritual compass.
So the rich young ruler walked away lost. And Peter and the disciple said in essence “Y’all if he can’t be saved who then can be saved?” And when it comes to salvation, brothers and sisters There is no other name under the heavens whereby men must be saved except the Name of Jesus. Saved in the Greek vernacular is the word Sozo. Sozo has to do with the idea of safety the idea of security and the idea of being rescued by God from a doomed damned and destructive existence in hell. The Doctrine of Salvation is real because I need Jesus to save my soul.
Nothing is impossible with God.. All thing are possible through Christ that strengthens me. Last verse 26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.
Start Closing
