Jesus had just recently begun His public ministry, we talked about the temptation of Jesus last week, this is followed by Jesus beginning His public ministry, calling His first disciples, and then coming to Galilee and ministering there.
Large crowds began to gather around Him, because people were coming from all over the land in order to seek Him out and hear from Him or be healed.
This brings us to our passage, Matt 5:1-12 here we have the beginning of the sermon on the Mount which is our longest recorded teaching from Jesus.
This sermon is really directed straight at Jesus’s disciples, and it is beneficial for us to look at to see what a true disciple should look like.
Today we’re gonna look at the beattitudes
Matt 5:1-12
Take some time in your small group and talk about these statements, what do you notice about what Jesus says it means to be blessed?
Someone who is a disciple, will have these needs:
Poor in Spirit
Mourn their sinfulness
Meek, lowly and humble
The answer to these needs is found in the 4th:
Hungering and Thirsting for righteousness leads us to cling to Christ because only He can provide
Upon receiving this righteousness, it will result in these characteristics:
Merciful
Pure in heart
Peacemaker
Persecution
These traits will be true of those who know God
