Hear the word of the Lord, O children of Israel,
for the Lord has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.
There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,
and no knowledge of God in the land;
Hosea began this section with an indictment (charge, rîḇ; cf. “charge” in 12:2 and the verb rîḇ, “rebuke,” in 2:2) of the nation for breach of covenant
The people were devoid of the qualities that were to characterize life within God’s covenant
There is no faithfulness
Faithfulness: the quality of being faithful.
There is no steadfast love
Steadfast love: loyal love n. — an unfailing kind of love, kindness, or goodness; often used of God’s love that is related to faithfulness to his covenant.
There is no knowledge of God in the land
knowledge n. — the psychological result of perception and learning and reasoning; sometimes simply endowed by God (often with focus on application of the knowledge).
Because there is no faithfulness, steadfast love, or Knowledge of God....
there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;
they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Violations of five of the Ten Commandments are specifically mentioned.
Swearing/Cursing
“Cursing” does not refer to improper speech as such, but to calling down a curse on another (cf. Job 31:30).
Lying / Murder / Stealing / Committing adultery
Therefore the land mourns,
and all who dwell in it languish,
and also the beasts of the field
and the birds of the heavens,
and even the fish of the sea are taken away.
Because of Israel’s sin, severe drought would sweep over the land and people would die (waste away). The three verbs in this verse should be translated in the future tense (cf. Hosea 2:9, 12). Drought was one of the curses threatened by the Law for breaking the covenant (cf. Lev. 26:19; Deut. 28:23–24).
and I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron and your earth like bronze.
And the heavens over your head shall be bronze, and the earth under you shall be iron. The Lord will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust shall come down on you until you are destroyed.
Yet let no one contend,
and let none accuse,
for with you is my contention, O priest.
God makes it clear through Hosea
