Jesus came to give us freedom from sin.
Baptism is a declaration of that freedom.
Sin always brings bondage—of the body, mind, soul and will. Sin enslaves us to its problems and practices. Christ came to set us free from this slavery!
In order for us to be free from this slavery we must die.
Salvation from Sin—vv. 1–5
Salvation from Sin—vv. 1–5
Reasoning—v. 1. Should we continue in sin so we may have more of God’s grace?
He may have known individuals who thought that because forgiveness is guaranteed, they could sin as much as they wanted. Such an attitude—deciding ahead of time to take advantage of God—shows that a person does not understand the seriousness of sin and do not appreciate the grace of God.
God’s forgiveness does not make sin less serious; Christ’s death shows the dreadful seriousness of sin. Jesus paid with his life so we could be forgiven. The availability of God’s mercy must not become an excuse for careless living and moral laxness.
We live in a world that screams tolerance for sin. We are surrounded by temptations and examples of sinful behavior with the tendency to justify sin.
Our freedom in Christ should not be used as an excuse to sin, nor should our life of obedience to Christ degenerate into legalism.
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
“By NO MEANS...” We find that our Newness of life in Christ—
If, then, you died in your baptism, stay dead! —Chrysostom
We must reject that notion—v. 2. When in Christ, we no longer live in sin but we have crucified the flesh.
Dying to sin is a lifelong process. When we accept Christ and die to our old nature, we begin a life of continually dying to the enticements of the world and living to please the One to whom we belong.
20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
In baptism, we relate to Christ’s death—v. 3. Those in Christ must share in His death.
Jesus spoke of self-denial—
23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.
A Christian life surrendered to God is no longer patterned after this world
1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Results - vv. 4-5. We are buried with the Lord in baptism, and raised with HIM.
Baptism is the symbol of inner cleansing, burying our sin, then rising to walk in newness of life in the Spirit.
The Greek expression translated “a new life” is better rendered “a new sphere which is life.”
Apart from Christ people are dead in their sins. But raised from the dead through faith in Christ, they enter an entirely new sphere of existence.
We are now alive in Christ.
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
WE are to walk by faith, not by sight.

DEATH -
v. 6. The “old man” is crucified. We were born into sin but now in Christ we are the children of God.
Romans ((1) Dead to Sin, Alive in Christ (6:1–14))
Our confidence in a resurrected life rests upon the fact that our old self was nailed to the cross with Jesus. We were “crucified with him” (v. 6). Believers, by definition, are those who by their union with Christ died with him on the cross.
That death had a definite purpose in the spiritual life history of the believer. We were crucified in order that our sinful nature might be stripped of its power.
DEATH - vs. 7
Dead to sin, we are freed; no longer a servant of sin —
34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.
DOMINION - vv. 8-9
Sin and death had dominion over us, but Christ conquered death for us.
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die;
DESIGN — vv. 10-11
10 When he died, he died once to break the power of sin. But now that he lives, he lives for the glory of God. 11 So you also should consider yourselves to be dead to the power of sin and alive to God through Christ Jesus.
Read and Pray vv. 12-14
Read and Pray vv. 12-14
v 12 Lord, Help me to overcome sin.
14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
v. 13 Lord, Help me to use every part of my body as an instrument of Righteousness.
9 How can a young person stay on the path of purity?
By living according to your word.
11 I have hidden your word in my heart
that I might not sin against you.
v. 14 God, thank you for your grace.
Sin doesn’t have to control you. We are not under the law but we are under grace.
Salvation brings freedom from sin, therefore we no longer need to be bound by any sin; there is power to overcome every temptation.
13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
Baptism is a declaration to the world that my old self is dead and I am now alive in Christ.
As I follow Jesus, help me to keep the dead man, the old man, the bound man dead and live in that new life that resurrected life that Jesus made possible for us to live in.
The old is gone, the new is here… walk in the new life that Jesus has prepared for you now.
I have decided to follow Jesus, no turning back…
