Rejoice in Spiritual Worship (10-16)
Don’t be led astray, be strengthened by grace.
In the Old Testament worship was linked to sacrifice. There was sacrifice for sin. Offerings for thanksgiving. Peace offerings, firstfruit offerings.
There are three “sacrificial offerings” in the New Testament that strengthen the heart.
The Sacrifice of Christ (10-14)
The Sacrifice of Christ (10-14)
We have an altar, that is better than the OT altar. The day of Atonement sacrifice was not to be eaten by the priests, unlike the other offerings that priests would use for their own food.
Christ’s Sacrifice is the final sacrifice for sin. Hebrews 10:12-14 “But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.”
He fulfilled the sacrifice for sin outside the camp. He suffered outside the gate, bearing our reproach.
Let us be identified with Him. Let us bear His reproach before the world, since He has borne our reproach before the Father.
The next two “sacrifices” are responses to Christ’s final sacrifice for sin. They bring joy in the journey of the Christian life.
The Sacrifice of Praise (15)
The Sacrifice of Praise (15)
Praise continually - 1 Thess 5:18 “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”
Praise fills our hearts with hope - Psalm 103:1 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name!”
Praise acknowledges God’s work in your life before the world. Psalm 105:1-5 “Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples! Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works! Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice! Seek the Lord and his strength; seek his presence continually! Remember the wondrous works that he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,”
