Parched
This morning the sermon comes out of ps again
As I was reading through this and it was Thursday I was trying to figure out the sermon
I read the Ps and was like yep that is me
Anyone ever been parched?
Definition
Thirsty fact
Psalm 143:6 NASB95
6 I stretch out my hands to You; My soul longs for You, as a parched land. Selah.
Have you ever just read scripture and go wow that is so me
As I was reading through psalms I read that and it just hit me
Wow I am so parched right now
David though explains it
And lets face it you don’t just wake up and are all of the sudden parched right
But to understand this being parched we need to look at the scripture in front
Psalm 143:1–5 NASB95
1 Hear my prayer, O Lord, Give ear to my supplications! Answer me in Your faithfulness, in Your righteousness! 2 And do not enter into judgment with Your servant, For in Your sight no man living is righteous. 3 For the enemy has persecuted my soul; He has crushed my life to the ground; He has made me dwell in dark places, like those who have long been dead. 4 Therefore my spirit is overwhelmed within me; My heart is appalled within me. 5 I remember the days of old; I meditate on all Your doings; I muse on the work of Your hands.
David is crying out to God in this Psalm for deliverance from the enemy
You can probably guess that it was a physical enemy right
But we can also understand that you and I as the believer will face persecution because Jesus faced it first
There are other ways that bring on being parched
We live in such a busy time period
But it is nothing new right
The disciples were busy people right
They had families and at some point it is conceivable they had kids
So our busyness is nothing new but still busyness often times leads to our being parched
Luke 10:38–42 NASB95
38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40 But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; 42 but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”
In this account Mary is so concerned with Jesus that she doesn’t do anything else
Martha is also so concerned with Jesus that she wants to make sure everything is perfect that she almost forgets about Jesus right
And I think sometimes we believers can fall into this trap
We can get so busy doing things for Jesus that we forget about Jesus
Just like Martha
Or maybe we can get so busy with life that we exclude Jesus from our everyday life and then before you know it we fall into being parched
And instead of crying out to God like David in the Psalms
A lot of us just kinda go with the flow right
We don’t do anything in the event of being persecuted right
We don’t do anything in the event of being bust either
We don’t do anything to combat it
And I understand that you can be the best prepared person and that doesn’t stop the storm from coming right
You can be all read up and prayed up and that may not stop the parched from coming
But it is in the midst of the being parched that we can do something
Psalm 42:1–2 NASB95
1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; When shall I come and appear before God?
In the midst of our life
In the midst of our busyness
In the midst of our being parched
We begin to wonder what is happening
Let make this relevant for us
We can a great Sunday right
Sunday School can be super awesome and amazing
Big church Worship can be amazing and the sermon can even be spot up
And then before you know it because of busyness
Or really because of being parched it can be Thursday before you pick up your Bible to read some
Let me clear this morning
We were not created to walk with Jesus like that
We were not created to meet with Jesus just once a week and that cover the rest of our week
That is not the purpose of the church
So that you can show up and get your Jesus fix for the week
But that is what being parched does to us
We can have a great time on Sunday and then before you know now is Wednesday or Thursday and we haven’t touched our Bibles
All because we got busy
All because we are parched
Like being thirsty
There is some truth to this widely repeated statement. “This can be a really helpful reminder to people, because many of us aren't very in tune with our thirst, so once we realize we're thirsty, our body really is calling out for water,” says Ginger Hultin
It’s not always 100 percent says the website but for most people I would say is more true than not
When you and I realize we are parched and it has been sometime since we have spent alone time with Jesus
Our soul is crying out for time with Jesus
But I know what starts to happen
When we realize we are parched and it is has been sometime since we spent with Jesus we get frustrated and upset with ourselves
I have been there
Might I introduce you to God who is full of mercy and grace
Lamentations 3:22–23 NASB95
22 The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. 23 They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.
Gods mercies are new every morning for us
Praise the Lord
So when you find yourself on Thursday and it has been sometime since you spent with Jesus
Or church leader, when you find yourself on Wednesday or Friday and you have to teach or lead on Sunday and you havn’t spent much if at all time with Jesus
Remember God’s mercies are new every morning
So instead of getting frustrated and upset and doing nothing about it
Realize it has been sometime since you and Jesus spent time together and then go spend time with Jesus!
If Jesus is our example lets look at what Jesus did after Big Ministry Events
Matthew 14:23 NASB95
23 After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone.
This is right after Jesus had feed the 5000
Jesus went away by Himself and spent time with God the Father
Now we did not feed 5000 people
But we spent 6 weeks walking around Montara praying and handing out flyers and sharing the Gospel
We sent our Youth Group to Camp Barnabas to serve
Then we sent them to Super Summer
Then we spent just a few hours in some of the hottest weather in the month having a block party to be in the community
Then we jumped right into a week long of VBS
And what a great 2 months of ministry church
But be on alert that we don’t get parched
IT is now that you need to be spending time with Jesus more than ever so that you are ready for the next ministry opportunity
So let us use Jesus as our example
And what we are to be doing goes right in the face of being parched
When you are parched it seems you don’t want to read you Bible
But when you are parched that is when you need to read it all the more
When you are parched it seems you don’t know what to pray or want to pray
But when you are parched that is when you need it all the more
It is when we are parched we need to press into Jesus
Even when we don’t want to we need it
Even when you don’t want to read you need to read your Bible because that is what pulls us out of being parched
We must spend time with Jesus so fix what ails us
And what ails us is that we haven’t spent much time with Jesus to fix that we need to spend time with Jesus daily
Day in and Day out we need to spend time with Jesus
CLOSING
As the band comes up
If you are here this morning and do not know Jesus personally I would invite you to the front to speak with someone
Or maybe you have a personal relationship and be honest with yourself you are parched
It has been so long since you spent time with Jesus
I would invite you the altar to repent and run back to Jesus
Or maybe there is another decision you need to make of church membership
The altar is open
