SERIES: HABITS OF A FRUITFUL CHRISTIAN LIFE

TODAYS MESSAGE: LEARN THAT BEARING FRUIT IS WARFARE

ABIDING IS HANGING OUT WITH YOUR FRIEND EVEN THOUGH THEY DON’T HAVE ANYTHING - YOU JUST LIKE THEM, WHO THEY ARE, ETC...

YOU ARE NOT BEARING FRUIT BECAUSE THE ENEMY IS WINNING

HOW IS HE WINNING?:

The devil is attacking our Abiding In Christ

SOME FOLKS HANG AROUND WITH JESUS BECAUSE THEY ARE MOOCHERS… YOU KNOW PEOPLE LIKE THAT?
THEY HANG WITH YOU WHEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING
THEY HANG WITH YOU WHEN YOU ARE POPULAR
BUT WHEN YOU ARE BROKE AND JUST BECOME REGULAR FOLK - NOT POPULAR - THEY ARE NOWHERE TO BE FOUND.
JOB - I BET HE WONT HANG OUT WITH YOU IF YOU TAKE SOME OF THIS STUFF FROM HIM
SO THE DEVIL STARTED ATTACKING HIS STUFF BECAUSE HE WANTED HIS ABIDING
i. Jesus introduces this IDEA in 14:31
John 14:31 ESV
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.
I WANT TO TEACH YOU THIS MORING SOMETHING THAT IS SO SIMPLE, THAT IF YOUR HEART AND MIND AND SOUL ARE NOT ATTENTIVE TO IT, YOU WILL ISS ITS SIGNIFICANCE AND POWER FOR YOUR LIFE.
I WANT YOU TO LISTEN WITH FRESH EARS AND HEARTS: THE LORD WILL HELP YOU TODAY IF YOU DO

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ABIDE IN CHRIST?

I. ABIDING IS TRUSTING JESUS (PASSIVE ABIDING)

1. WE TRUST WHO CHRIST IS TO US

a. JOHN 14:6
John 14:6 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
THE DEVIL ATTACKS YOUR TRUST IN THE EXCLUSIVITY OF CHRIST AND HIS WORD: SEEKING TO CAUSE US NOT TO TRUST HIS HIM AS ENOUGH - AS ALL THAT WE NEED FOR LIFE AND SALVATION
THE MORE I GROW THE MORE I COME TO SEE THAT THIS WALK IS NOT MERELY ABOUT KNOWLEDGE BUT ABOUT INTIMACY WITH CHRIST - THIS IS WHAT JESUS IS TEACHING US IN THE CALL TO ABIDE IN HIM.
KNOWLEDGE DOES NOT LEAD TO OBEDIENCE
TRUST DOES
b. JOHN 15:1
John 15:1 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.

2. WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR US

a. HIS MIRACLES

John 14:11 ESV
Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
NOT ONLY DISPLAYS OF GOD’S POWER IN HIM
BUT VISUAL SIGNS FOR OUR BELIEF

b. HIS DEATH AND RESURRECTION

John 14:19 ESV
Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live.

c. HIS PROMISES

John 14:2–3 ESV
In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
John 14:18 ESV
“I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
John 14:26 ESV
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

II. ABIDING MEANS OUR OBEDIENCE TO CHRIST – (ACTIVE ABIDING)

1. JESUS ASKS OF US WHAT HE HAS AND IS DOING

John 14:31 ESV
but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

2. MY OBEDIENT LIFE IS THE PROOF OF MY ABIDING IN HIM

John 15:8 ESV
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
John 15:10 ESV
If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.

3. MY OBEDIENT LIFE IS THE PROOF OF MY LOVING HIM AND HIM LOVING ME

John 14:21 ESV
Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
John 14:22 ESV
Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?”
John 14:23 ESV
Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
John 15:14 ESV
You are my friends if you do what I command you.

4. MY OBEDIENT LIFE MAKES MY PRAYER LIFE POWERFUL

John 15:7 ESV
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
John 15:16 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

a. Prayer Is God’s Gift For Us To Seek The Supernatural Display Of God’s Power In Our Natural Circumstances

John 14:13–14 ESV
Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
John 15:7 ESV
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

b. Prayer Is Supernatural And If We Use It For Personal Desires We Are Using It Wrongly

i. WHEN WE ASK THE LORD FOR THE RESOURCES TO LIVE THIS LIFE AND TO BEAR WITNESS FOR HIM HE CAN, IF IT IS HIS WILL, GIVE US THE NATURAL THINGS THAT WE ALSO DESIRE – BUT THE REVERSE IS NOT THE CASE

III. WHAT IS THE FRUIT WE ARE TO BEAR?

1. HIS PEACE IN THE MIDST OF BEING HATED BECAUSE OF HIM

John 14:27 ESV
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 15:18 ESV
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.
John 15:19 ESV
If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
John 15:20 ESV
Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.
John 15:21 ESV
But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me.

2. HIS JOY IN MY EXPERIENCE OF SORROW FOR HIM

John 15:11 ESV
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 16:20 ESV
Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy.
John 16:21 ESV
When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world.
John 16:22 ESV
So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.

3. HIS LOVE AS MY SACRIFICIAL OFFERING FOR HIS GLORY

John 15:9 ESV
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love.
John 15:12 ESV
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
John 15:13 ESV
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
