Divine appointments
Everything God did, and did in and through Jesus was by divine design.
Jesus had many divine appointments and we continue to look at them.
Divine appointment with John the Baptist (Jn1:30-33)
Divine appointment at wedding (Jn2:6-9)
Divine appointment w/Nicodemus (Jn3:1-21)
Divine appointment in Samaria (Jn4:1-29, 39-42)
Divine appointment with certain man (Jn5:5-9)
Then we start to see a shift from the revelation of who Jesus is, to the persecution of Jesus because of His claims.
Last week we looked at the aftereffects of the divine appointment with the certain man who was healed on the Sabbath.
The Jews had issues with the breaking of the Law and that leads us to our next divine appointment.
The teaching to the Jews about Jesus equality with the Father and about the four resurrections.
So, this evening, here is what we are going to look at:
Gleaning from the text (Jn5:24-30)
Believe My words and He who sent Me (Jn5:24-27)
Believe authority given, judgment coming (Jn5:27-30)

What is Jesus claim (v.25)?
What is Jesus claim that the Father gave Him (v.26)?
Why does Jesus have authority (v.27)?

Now, again Jesus makes another claim (vv.28-29), what is it?
Why is Jesus judgment just (v.30)?
Notice back in (v.25) it starts with truly, truly, or some say, verily, verily, or even most assuredly I say to you. - - - - This is an attention grabber line.
Jesus wants their attention for what He is about to say is important.
And to us, it is important that we get it too.
Believe the words
Jesus claims to have authority to give life and raise the dead.
What does Jesus call for here in (v.24)?
Jesus calls for belief again, just like (Jn3:16) and the results of believe, eternal life.
First resurrection for lost sinners to life (5:24)
From death, spiritual death, to life, to spiritual life, born again of water and spirit (Jn3:5)
As many commentators say this is either the claim of an insane man, a liar or from the Lord God Himself.
True belief in the Father is true belief in the Son too and visa versa.
Let the claim settle in, from death to life.
One of the aspects of eternal life, is leaving the condemnation, the separation from God to receive the mercy and grace and eternal life with God through the Son!
Commentator Clarke, I’ve used a few times says this. “the one who has passed from death to life has changed his country, or place of abode.
Death is the country where every Christless soul lives.
The man who knows not God lives a dying life, or a living death but he who believes in the Son of God passes over from the empire of death, to the empire of life.”
let me put (v.25) back up for just a minute before moving to the 2nd resurrection.
The spiritually dead, the sinners, will hear the voice of the Son of God, hear with belief, and they will come alive!
Wait, hold on.
This is not exclusive to those who believe, it says “dead men” that means; 2nd resurrection is the resurrection of the dead, all the dead.
They will hear the voice and come out of the grave physically, we know that day is coming, the dead in Christ will rise first, then those who are alive in Christ then the rests.
as noted in 1The4:13-18; 1Cor15.
(Transition) OK, now ready to look at the next statement.
One commentator I read says this is another resurrection here.
See our life is derived from our parents, we had nothing to do with it, but Christ’s life was within Himself.
For He was in the beginning (Jn1:4); the grave could not hold Him.
Jesus had life in himself (Jn5:26; Jn10:17-18)
Let me give you this other passage
Jesus had life in Himself, it was not dependent upon other people or other things (Kuzik)
Jesus does not identify with the Father as one, but asserted equality with God as the Son.
They are not the same, but they are equal
Jesus was the word, Jn1:14, named 1:17.
This counters the “Jesus only” or “Oneness Pentecostals” doctrine which when you listen to it, sounds good, except it is saying they are one, not a triune, or a trinity God.
Others have gone the other direction and assert because of this entire passage that Jesus is not God (i.e.
Mormon’s; Jehovah Witnesses)
(Transition) Now this leads us to our next point, which we have touched on a little already, authority.
Believe authority given
God given authority, Jesus claims it, so let’s look at it together.
Who is the authority giver (v.27); given to whom, and why (v.27)?
Authority to do what (v.29)?
This further emphasis the resurrection of all humanity, both those who have done good and those who have done evil.
Commentator Morris “This does not mean that salvation is on the basis of good works, for this very Gospel makes it plain over and over again that men enter eternal life when they believe on Jesus Christ.
But the lives they life form the test of the faith they profess.”
Works does not produce faith and salvation; but salvation through faith will produce faithful works as James covers (Jm2:14-17)
All will hear His voice (v.28), all will respond (v.29), some raised to glory (resurrection of life), some to condemnation (resurrection of judgment), but all will be changed.
The religious leaders, the Jews (v.16) who sought to kill Him, must have been blown away by this statement He has authority
To give life, to raise life, to call out of death into life, or into eternal condemnation, for only God can do that, Jesus is claiming authority and equality with God.
Right now Christ Jesus is our Savior, but all authority has been given to for all judgment too, and he will come return and sit in judgment, for sin has already been dealt with.
Consider this, here is a bonus
Sin is not in consideration when Christ returns, the raising of the dead, final salvation for the believers, final condemnation/judgment for the unbelievers.
(Transition) still have one more verse to look at
Judgment is righteous, just, fair, right as it says in some versions.
But look at the phrase “I can of Myself do nothing” - some have used this to say, there’s proof Jesus is not God, for God can do anything.
That Jesus is inferior to the Father, so let’s look at this for a few minutes.
Does this mean Jesus cannot do anything without the permission of the Father?
Does it make Jesus inferior to the Father.
Let’s look at some other scriptures in John then talk about it.
Scriptures on authority (Jn5:19, 6:38; 10:18, 12:49-50, 8:29-30)
Turn to Jn5:19
OK, now
that goes hand in have with the later part of (v.30) but now look at
He says He has authority here, but in (5:30) says he does nothing on his own initiative, does that mean he does not have the authority, or does it mean He does not exercise the authority?
Does Jesus not speaking on own authority mean he does not have authority?
Read the verse again and consider it.
His task is to do the will of the Father (5:30); For His task brings eternal life.
Because the Father has commanded it, and has sent him.
One more
God’s grand plan, God’s scheme of redemption.
Jesus is the representation of the Father (exact representation according to Heb1:3.
Now, look at what more He says, HE who sent me is WITH ME.
He is not alone, He has the Holy Spirit (Jn1:32); so we have all three parts of the God head.
Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Why is Jesus judgment just (v.30)?
Because he does not seek his own will (in the flesh) but the will of the Father who sent Him.
