I love travelling!
I don’t love the hours in the car, but I love experiencing and seeing new things and places.
Growing up we would take long trips, usually back to Texas to see my grandparents.
I remember driving through the Ozarks many times.
I used to love to stop at the gift shops and buy the same old junk every year.
Those were different days!
I remember sleeping as we travelled in my dad’s work van.
We put a queen size mattress in the back and drove with us three kids laying on the mattress.
No seat belts, no air conditioning, and no windows.
I never thought of it as dangerous, I just thought it was fun!
But one of the best parts was just seeing the different landscape from area to area.
Trying new food choices
Seeing new landmarks along the way.
This Christian life we are living is truly a journey!
Hebrews 11 is a journey, a journey of faith.
We are travelling right now with some of the Bible’s greatest heroes.
Able - Experienced the offering of faith.
Enoch - Experienced the purpose of faith
Noah - Experienced the protection of faith
Abraham - Experienced the obedience of faith
Sarah - Experienced the strength of faith.
It is important that we learn from these different facets of faith.
But the Holy Spirit led the author of Hebrews to take a break in these verses and show us some of the greatest experiences we can have along this journey with Christ.
What experiences does God have in mind for us along this journey of faith?
What is the true destination of faith?
I want to look at three exciting realities along this journey walking by faith.
I. Experience the New Life
v. 12
The Bible says that Abraham and Sarah were as good as dead.
Seems rude…but as far as giving birth to a baby, they were!
But God brought life from death!
We have new life in Christ when we respond to the Gospel!
A. The Need for New Life
In Abraham and Sarah’s case they were past the age- they were dead to child birth.
In order for God to fulfill God’s promises to them, God would need to give them life again so that Sarah could conceive.
A new life for you and me is also necessary because we are all born dead!
We are born separated from God, dead to God, because of our sinful nature.
Adam and Eve were born alive.
But As soon as they took of the fruit they died spiritually, and began the process of dying physically.
Without choice, obedience to God was simple and effortless.
Love is communicated through choice.
If you do not have the choice to love your spouse, it really means nothing to them.
God gave them the opportunity to choose.
They chose sin - Disobedience.
That is until another man was born - The Bible calls Him the Second Adam.
Jesus - born without sin, without death, lived a perfect life.
Because of Jesus’ obedience, we all have the opportunity to claim righteousness.
We have the opportunity to have new life.
Quickening—to (re-)vitalize, to make alive, to give life, quicken.
Have you experienced the new life Jesus came to give you?
Are you saved, do you know your sins are forgiven?
B. The Nature of the New Life
When something is made new, it is different from the old.
We need to put on this new nature, and not live in the old life.
There are recognizable characteristics of this new nature!
The new nature is the nature of Christ!
What are some of the characteristics of our new nature?
Paul, in Galatians, makes a comparison of the characteristics of the old nature and the characteristics of the new nature:
I hope and I truly pray that everyone hearing my voice today has experienced that new nature.
No, You will not be perfect!
But you will do right so long as you yield to that new nature in Christ.
But there is a second exciting reality to walking by faith...
II.
Experience the New Sight
v. 13
None of the Patriarchs saw the complete fulfillment of God’s promises, yet the Bible says that they saw them afar off
When you are travelling, whether by car, bicycle or by foot, sight is very important!
You have to see as you take each step of the journey…but you also have to have a clear vision of where you are going - what is your destination.
“The important thing is not what we live in, but what we live for.”
These men and women that we have been looking at lived in tents, but they also had that heavenly vision of that better country where they were headed.
We need to keep our focus on the promises that God has given us, just as these men and women of faith did.
God’s promises are always fulfilled, either immediately or ultimately
Either way they will be fulfilled!
How do we experience new sight on our journey of walking by faith?
We must have...
A. A Persuasion of the Promises
Verse 13 says that they saw the fulfilment of these promises a far off, and were persuaded of them.
We pursue what we believe to be true.
Paul challenged Timothy to ...
Sometimes we can be persuaded to believe a lie.
The multitude was persuaded to do what the chief priest and elders wanted.
Sometimes men will not be persuaded of the truth and have to be left in God’s hands.
We all should be persuaded of the promises in God’s Word!
Paul was persuaded of some things...
But above all-Paul was persuaded of the promises of God!
Are you putting your faith in the promises of God, or your own strength, wisdom and pocket book?
Not only must we have a persuasion of the promises, but also...
B. An Embrace of the Promises
v.13
The patriarchs were persuaded of these promises, and they embraced them!
Embrace - to welcome, embrace, receive gladly
God doesn’t want us just to be persuaded of the promises, but to fully embrace them!
This will cause you to take up the Will of God for your life and live your life for Him!
Abraham and Sarah embraced God’s plan for their life!
And so should you!
Do you want to be blessed of God?
C. A Confession of the Pilgrimage
vs. 13
They not only were persuaded of the promises, they embraced them, and that caused them to confess they were just pilgrims in this earth.
This world is not my home, I’m just a passing through
